Moor
Moor | Laurie R King
14 posts | 40 read | 11 to read
In re-creating Sherlock Holmes in previous books as an adjunct to her chief protagonist, Mary Russell, King has set the couple's adventures in a milieu consistent with her own creation and, although true to the place and period, independent of Conan Doyle's work. Holmes has been invited by his old friend the Rev. Baring-Gould to look into not only an unexplained death on the moor but, more important in the ancient cleric's mind, sightings of a phantom coach on the moor - possibly inhabited by a phantom noblewoman and accompanied by some phantom dogs. Holmes, in turn, pulls Mary from her studies at Oxford, enlists her in the quest, and finds himself taking a second seat to her endeavors. True to their expectations on the forbidding and difficult moor, the rumors have a real-world explanation, but it is one that combines more wild emotion, surprise, and frightening suspense than any ghost story could.

I read one issue of Real Simple this month and don‘t think I‘ll get through any more in the next couple days. Nonetheless , I‘ll keep going until they‘re all gone!

Meanwhile, I finished The Moor at Gladstone‘s and was prepared to bring it home for the newly restored LFL at the local community center. However, my hotel in Bath had an informal lending library, so I left it there.

julieclair Good for you! How was Gladstone‘s? 2mo

Atmospheric tale of Dartmoor, mixing real people and fiction. I remain sceptical of the age difference here, but I do think the author is handling it well. Very readable.

I‘ve listened to the first few of this series, but the library doesn‘t have them all in audio, so instead I read with the narrators voice in my head. #cottoncandyreads

#Booked2019 Female detective. I've been really enjoying Laurie R. King's Mary Russell. Mary is such a likeable and dynamic character! In this one Sherlock returns to Baskerville Hall with Mary along.

Glad to be back in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes world once again! In this fourth book of the series, Russell and Holmes are back to the moors - the site of Sherlock‘s original case of The Hound of the Baskervilles - to solve a similar type of mystery.

This book had an incredible sense of place; the moor itself was a main characters. The atmospheric nature of the book and the growth of the characters made it a recommend for me!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

I am enjoying this series. Thought I might stop since the third was meh. But this one is doing well. I also read the original Sherlock Holmes Hounds of Baskerville first. (Reading in the car during soccer practice.)

Mehso-so

The narrator of the audio book is great and I love the descriptions and the relationship between Sherlock and his wife Russell. Still the mystery portion of the book drags a bit and it is not enough of a page-turner. I still would recommend the audio version just because I enjoyed the narrator so much.

Ran across a copy in the thrift store for $1. Obviously, it had to come home with me.
