I first discovered Naomi Shihab Nye‘s poetry when I was in jr. high, and I love her still. This was my March poetry selection—it collects selected poems from three other books of her poetry, so I thought it would be a good pick with lots to mull over! There are some gems here, from “Famous” (one of my long-time faves) to “Kindness” and “The Traveling Onion.” My favorite collection of hers is still Red Suitcase, but this is definitely a pick.
These words the world rains back and forth
are temporary as clouds.
Clouds? Tell your children to look up.
The sky is the only store worth shopping in
for anything as long as a life.
—Naomi Shihab Nye,
from “Rebellion against the North Side”
Since when do children sketch dreams with price tags attached?
Don‘t tell me they were born this way.
We were all born like empty fields.
What we are now shows what has been planted.
—Naomi Shihab Nye, from “Rebellion against the North Side”
I would tell my father
I cannot move one block without you
I will never recover from your love
yet I stand by his bed saying things I have said before
and he answers and we go on this way
smoothing the silences
nothing can heal
—from “What People Do”
1. Tooooo many! Ship of Magic, Sleeping Murder, Inspired, Words Under the Words, Invitation to Love, and two on the Old Testament for my EfM group at church.
2. The tagged book, and Felicity by Mary Oliver (because I can‘t check out just one)
3. Night. Definitely night.

The onion isn't what comes to mind when I think #comfortfood. Still, I love this poem by Naomi Shihab Nye.
