Womenfolks: Growing Up Down South | Shirley Abbott
8 posts
A classic that has been in print since its first publication in 1983, Womenfolks is both a personal memoir and a meditation on the often pernicious mythologies of southern cultural history. Shirley Abbott gives us the gritty, independent women of the backwoods, the Souths true heroines, whose hardscrabble world is one of red dirt and hard worka far cry from the hoopskirts and magnolias of southern lore. As honest, vibrant, and remarkable as the women whose stories illuminate these pages, Womenfolks draws a vivid portrait of a rural culture beset by poverty and sustained by deeply rooted traditions. In her new preface to this edition, Abbott assesses what has changedand what may never changeabout the burdens of southern history and expresses her hope that the better angels of our nature may prevail in our still-new century.

I‘m trying to do a few challenges for 2020. It‘s harder the more I look 😂 I‘m looking at most of The Read Harder challenge but I‘m also trying to use the library for most or almost all the books and give preference to women authors. We will see how far we can go. So far I‘m stuck on indie horror book with a woman author

This is so true!!! My dad is notorious for interrupting me when I am reading... he could not have said a word for hours but as soon as I pick up a book he thinks it is time to talk!

Cheshirecat913 True story. My husband gets annoyed because it will take me a minute to look up if he calls my name. Had to finish the paragraph at least. 7y
