Birding Without Borders
Birding Without Borders: An Obsession, a Quest, and the Biggest Year in the World | Noah Strycker
10 posts | 4 read | 9 to read
Traveling to 41 countries in 2015 with a backpack and binoculars, Noah Strycker became the first person to see more than half the worlds 10,000 species of birds in one year. In 2015, Noah Strycker set himself a lofty goal: to become the first person to see half the worlds birds in one year. For 365 days, with a backpack, binoculars, and a series of one-way tickets, he traveled across forty-one countries and all seven continents, eventually spotting 6,042 speciesby far the biggest birding year on record. This is no travelogue or glorified checklist. Noah ventures deep into a world of blood-sucking leeches, chronic sleep deprivation, airline snafus, breakdowns, mudslides, floods, war zones, ecologic devastation, conservation triumphs, common and iconic species, and scores of passionate bird lovers around the globe. By pursuing the freest creatures on the planet, Noah gains a unique perspective on the world they share with usand offers a hopeful message that even as many birds face an uncertain future, more people than ever are working to protect them.

Settled in to @LitStephanie recommendation today - The Big Year… which was an inspired recommendation after I‘d been reading the tagged book about a guy trying to spot 5,000 of the worlds birds in one calendar year. Loved the movie. Big thanks @LitStephanie

LitStephanie I knew you would like it! Yay! 3y

Thanks so much for the recommendation @LitStephanie my life could use some comedy right now - so I‘ve just purchased the DVD online for Qa.20! Bargain!

LitStephanie Awesome! I hope you love it as much as I do. It is a parody of the birding world. As a birder who doesn't even have a life list, this movie makes me laugh so much. 3y
AmyG This was a funny movie. 3y
Mitch @LitStephanie I can see there will lots of specific vocabulary to get excited about 🙌 3y

My bookseller recommended this to me this weekend - it looks fab. The author sets a target to see 5,000 bird species in one year ( half of the world‘s species) ! Wow!

LitStephanie That reminds me of the movie Big Year. 😀 3y
Mitch @LitStephanie I‘ve not heard of that - Googling it now! 👍🏼 3y

I‘m not into birdwatching myself, but I do find birds fascinating, and Strycker‘s AWESOME with sharing his enthusiasm and his wisdom in this book. He‘s a great storyteller, and very infectious to boot, so I wouldn‘t be surprised if this book brings a few readers over to the feathery side of life, so to speak XD.

Tamra I love it when I think I have no interest in something or the topic seems very odd, but then am drawn in and end up being so glad I read it. 7y
kammartinez @Tamra I agree! It takes a great storyteller for that magic to happen for me, but when you get the right mix of great narrator + great topic, it's absolute dynamite for the brain XD. 7y

Loved this! So many fascinating details about his time exploring different countries and their birds. As a casual bird watcher I‘m now determined to get a pair of binoculars and take it to the next level.
