P.S. I Miss You
P.S. I Miss You | Jen Petro-Roy
11 posts | 8 read | 9 to read
A heartbreakingyet ultimately upliftingepistolary novel about family, religion, and having the courage to be yourself. "Jen Petro-Roy has created a character with the potential to be as iconic as Judy Blume's Margaret." Erin Dionne, author of Notes from an Accidental Band Geek Evie is heartbroken when her strict Catholic parents send her pregnant sister, Cilla, away to stay with a distant great-aunt. All Evie wants is for her older sister to come back. Forbidden from speaking to Cilla, Evie secretly sends her letters. Evie writes about her family, torn apart and hurting. She writes about her life, empty without Cilla. And she writes about the new girl in school, June, who becomes her friend, and then maybe more than a friend. Evie could really use some advice from Cilla. But Cilla isnt writing back, and its time for Evie to take matters into her own hands. P.S. I Miss You by Jen Petro-Roy is a heartfelt middle grade novel dealing with faith, identity, and finding your way in difficult times. A touching story of sisterly devotion and self-discovery. Readers will cheer on Jen Petro-Roys sweet, strong protagonist as she overcomes challenging family circumstances to embrace her own identity. Barbara Dee, author of Star-Crossed

Conditions are perfect for a lazy, reading weekend. It‘s rainstorming outside, I‘m on-boarding new meds, and I have my special lady time and I don‘t want to move.

Mehso-so

This book format is all in letters written. Because of all the letters from Evelyn, you really get a sense of who she is and what she's going through. It is heavy and sad. Make sure you have tissues ready if you're reading this!

Peddler410 Why the so-so rating? Just curious. 7y
KatDowney Hi @Peddler410 I chose so-so rating because though I liked it, I didn't love it. Some of the story feels super judgmental. It was also strange to have it in letters that are completely one sided. If I hadn't listened to the audiobook it definitely would have been harder for me to get into. That being said it was still like able. 7y

I picked this up after an EW story about the author not getting invited to schools because of the content. Evie‘s evolving relationship with her faith was interesting. Everything centered around her sexuality felt hollow and inauthentic.

johnnie_cakes It also occurred to me that this is a weird rip-off of The Color Purple. A girl writes letters to her sister who has been sent away, and they‘re about religion and being a lesbian. 7y

When high school student Cilla gets pregnant, her strict Catholic parents send her to live with her great-aunt until she has the baby. Missing her older sister, Evie starts writing her letters in which she tells Cilla about everything—school, her frustration with their parents, her growing feelings for a girl, & more. Cilla doesn‘t respond but it doesn‘t stop Evie from writing as she tries to make sense of her changing world. A good MG read.

TracyReadsBooks @Jabberwocky Yep. Both Amazon and Goodreads have it as an MG debut (4th-7th grade). I think the EW blurb along with the author‘s comments I saw—in response to schools who said the content was too controversial and that they didn‘t want an author visit—also presented it as MG. I know middle school students, 5th-7th, who will enjoy this book. And, I definitely think it has a place in our library. (edited) 7y
Jabberwocky Ooooh, I jut don‘t know what MG stood for 😅 7y
TracyReadsBooks @Jabberwocky My bad! I‘m sorry. Middle Grade...I over answered, as you can see, because of the chatter about the book. And because I really liked it! 7y

I was lucky enough to get to read an arc of this beautiful, heart-wrenching book. I found Evie so relatable (and sweet). It's going to be a life-changer for young LGBT+ kids who've never seen themselves on the pages of a book before.
