Chiefs: A Novel (25th Anniversary Edition)
Chiefs: A Novel (25th Anniversary Edition) | Stuart Woods
7 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
The Edgar Award-winning mystery that launched the career of bestselling novelist Stuart Woods. In the bitter winter of 1920, the first body is found in Delano, Georgia; the naked corpse of an unidentified teenager. There is no direct evidence of murder, but the body bears marks of what seems to be a ritual beating. The investigation falls to Will Henry Lee, a failed cotton farmer newly appointed as Delano's first chief of police. Lee's obsession with the crime begins a story that weaves through the decades, following the life of a small southern town and the role of three police chiefs in unraveling the crime. Chiefs is the best kind of thriller, where the investigation plays out against the drama beneath the surface of a seemingly placid community, seething with the pressures of race, love, hate, and; always; political power, extending from the town fathers all the way to Washington, DC. Includes a new foreword by the author on the twenty-fifth anniversary of its publication.

Pickpick

I still really like this book. It follows three chiefs of police in a small Georgia town, from the 1920s to the early 1960s. Each one is trying to solve some vicious murders of young boys that began in the 20s. Issues of racism and misogyny (to a lesser degree) are also dealt with in the novel.

More Chiefs. I am on the last section though, so I should be done soon. It‘s getting a tad hot to walk at lunch; I‘m going to have to move to evening walks soon. #audiowalk

I do not remember that graphic first sex then rape scene from the first time I read this book! I don‘t think it‘s needed to show what a despicable person this particular character is. #audiowalk

More Chiefs. I guess I liked it before because it really is good. I hate it when I reread a book that I once loved and it turns out to be not so good. Glad that‘s not happening with this one. #audiowalk

Listening to an old novel I loved back when I first read it. Got in my longest walk since I started walking again. 😊 #audiowalk
