Miss D and Me
Miss D and Me: Life with the Invincible Bette Davis | Kathryn Sermak
4 posts | 3 read | 8 to read
For ten years Kathryn Sermak was at Bette Davis's side--first as an employee, and then as her closest friend--and in Miss D and Me she tells the story of the great star's harrowing but inspiring final years, a story fans have been waiting decades to hear. Miss D and Me is a story of two powerful women, one at the end of her life and the other at the beginning. As Bette Davis aged she was looking for an assistant, but she found something more than that in Kathryn: a loyal and loving buddy, a co-conspirator in her jokes and schemes, and a competent assistant whom she trained never to miss a detail. But Miss D had strict rules for Kathryn about everything from how to eat a salad to how to wear her hair...even the spelling of Kathryn's name was changed (adding the "y") per Miss D's request. Throughout their time together, the two grew incredibly close, and Kathryn had a front-row seat to the larger-than-life Davis's career renaissance in her later years, as well as to the humiliating public betrayal that nearly killed Miss D. The frame of this story is a four-day road trip Kathryn and Davis took from Biarritz to Paris, during which they disentangled their ferocious dependency. Miss D and Me is a window into the world of the unique and formidable Bette Davis, told by the person who perhaps knew her best of all.

This is one of those nostalgia filled, feel-good memoirs. If you‘re a fan of old Hollywood, it‘s a must read. Kathryn Sermak has a beautiful insight into the later years of the icon, Bette Davis.

After coupons and deals, I bought this book for $5 at Barnes and Noble. Bette Davis is my favorite! 💟

Billypar Do you have a favorite BD film? I think mine is The Letter- she's a great as a femme fatale. Though I remember her characters from All About Eve and and Baby Jane the most- those are close runners up. 7y
Rachbb3 @Billypar I love All About Eve, it was the first film I saw her in. She's also played in a couple of Agatha Christie adaptations, Hush...Hush Sweet Charlotte, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. They're all good. 7y

First off I'd like to thank Netgallay for my advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. This book was so heartwarming and such a tear jerker. The love that Cath (Miss D changes it to a C) has for Bette Davis radiates through the whole story. I loved learning about what Miss D was like in her older years and learned so much from her as well.

I am 89% finished with this lovely book. I want to finish but at the same time I don't because I am loving spending time with both the author and Ms Davis herself. Highly recommend!
