Readers, librarians, and all those books that have drawn a challenge have a brand new hero.... Stand up and cheer, book lovers. This ones for you. Kathi Appelt, author of the Newbery Honor-winning The Underneath An inspiring tale of a fourth-grader who fights back when her favorite book is banned from the school libraryby starting her own illegal locker library! It all started the day Amy Anne Ollinger tried to check out her favorite book in the whole world, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, from the school library. Thats when Mrs. Jones, the librarian, told her the bad news: her favorite book was banned! All because a classmates mom thought the book wasnt appropriate for kids to read. Amy Anne decides to fight back by starting a secret banned books library out of her locker. Soon, she finds herself on the front line of an unexpected battle over book banning, censorship, and who has the right to decide what she and her fellow students can read. Reminiscent of the classic novel Frindle by Andrew Clements for its inspiring message, Alan Gratz' Ban This Book is a love letter to the written word and its power to give kids a voice. Ban This Book is absolutely brilliant and belongs on the shelves of every library in the multiverse.Lauren Myracle, author of the bestselling Internet Girls series, the most challenged books of 2009 and 2011

Such a cute MG book! Amy Anne, a 4th grader, decides to fight back when her favorite book is banned from the school library because one parent decided it was inappropriate for kids. She and two of her friends start a secret banned book library out of her locker! Soon, Amy Anne is front and center in the battle against censorship.

From my 10 year old
"I like this book because it talks about books. I personally love books because reading is the best thing ever! I think it is interesting that people ban books because of every little thing that one person thinks is bad for kids. I want to read a lot of other books mentioned inside.. except the scary one [Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark]."

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I would have read this in one sitting, if my day had allowed. What a great #NYWD22 selection and first read of the year.

Amy Anne is horrified to learn that her favorite book (From the Mixed Up Files…) is not available at her school‘s library b/c a parent has deemed it “inappropriate”…along with several other books. The banned books are Amy Anne‘s call to action as she sets up an underground library to make these titles accessible…

JackOBotts This was such an enjoyable, feel-good read. A young girl finds her voice to speak up for what she believes in…got this Momma teary eyed, too. 💜 I can‘t wait for my son to read this book in a few years. 📚📚📚 3y
monalyisha The sweetest review! 💓 Glad it was a winner! 3y
SRWCF Sounds cute! Don't parents know that as soon as something gets "banned," that very something will be very much sought after??? 3y
MeganAnn Yay! I‘m so happy you enjoyed it! This one had me teary eyed as well. ❤️ 3y
JackOBotts @SRWCF - right! Like, “what‘s so ‘bad‘ about XYZ?” I really enjoyed seeing how the kids came together and ultimately took a stand for what they felt was right. Really empowering and a good message to children to use their voices. Give me hope…💜💜 3y

Lent to me by a school librarian it‘s a great little book. I recommend all book lovers to get a copy, read it then pass it along to a child in your life. So much in it. Set in an American school the essential points are universal.

4-6 grade book about those grades fighting back against book banning in their school library. Amy Anne is a quiet child, spends all her time at the library, and reminds me so much of myself when I was younger. (I was homeschooled thou) I loved and her friends final plan for the school board. The loop around Treys mom was very well placed, and used to help the story. I felt with these children so badly it hurt. Teared up once or twice

I love this librarian 📚
She‘s standing up in front of the school board to tell them off. They breached protocol because a well know and rich community member says some books shouldn‘t be allowed in the school. Which one is Amy Anne‘s favorite book. This is an elementary school book written for middle school grade. Have to remind myself about that when Amy Anne reacts in childish ways. Same with it simply coming from her point of view

A moving elementary/middle grade novel about censorship and banning books. As a former young reader and now librarian I came across this in a local bookstore. I bought it. I read it in mostly one sitting. I‘m not the fastest reader.

I was on the journey with Amy Anne. I could feel her loneliness at school and at home. So when her prized library books are banned, the books she has made into her friends, books could feel her loss.
REVIEW CT‘D ⬇️

Moonprismpower REVIEW PT 1 CT‘D:thoroughly enjoyed Amy Anne‘s surprise strength as she created the Banned Books Locker Library. How her resilience in the face of misguided authority forged friendships amongst her peers and trust, respect, care and alliance between students. As a librarian of course I was concerned 😂😂 about the “borrowed” banned library books, and Amy Anne‘s shared patron borrowing history 😯😳. But she‘s a kid on a mission saving banned books! (edited) 3y
Moonprismpower REVIEW PT 2: Overall I really enjoyed this book. I suffered and celebrated along with Amy Anne and am so happy I picked up this book. 3y

A few months ago, I read what was basically the YA version of this book, Suggested Reading by David Connis, and it‘s hard not to compare them to each other. But even if I hadn‘t read the other book, this book still would have been a so-so. I felt the characters were very immature for fourth graders. When I started reading, I thought the were in first or second grade. When Amy‘s school bans books, she starts a library in her locker. 3⭐️

This was my middle grade choice for #doublespin

I loved Amy Anne‘s journey to find her voice and speak up. I thought the topic of censorship was well written for a middle grade audience & still kept me engaged as an adult. Amy Anne reminded me a bit of myself at her age — quiet, shy with my nose in a book & the oldest with two younger brothers I can relate to her struggles with her family. My first Gratz book, but definitely not the last.

Last week I read this for #bannedbooksweek . This is a smart middle grade book about a 4th grade girl who starts a banned books library in her locker after the school board bans her favorite book from the school library. Although fiction, it shows us a great example of why banning books is wrong. Bonus points for a main character of color!

Loved this! Amy Anne is content to live her life between the pages of a book. She's quiet- at home, at school, swallowing her words to keep the peace. But when her beloved school library comes under fire of a parent with a Book Banning agenda, Amy Anne needs to find her voice in order to speak up for the books. The ending is especially lovely.

When Amy Anne‘s ‘favourite book in the whole world‘ was banned from the school library, she started her own banned books library - secretly, illegally! A cute and inspiring story about speaking up and standing up for what is right, and the concept of book censorship. Love the premise and great story.

This book is EXTREMELY similar in plot to Property of the Rebel Librarian. But I think this book was written first and it is also better. It‘s a love letter to librarians and the freedom to read. I am not a huge fan of “banned book week” but this would be a great read for it! Loved all the book reference and it made me want to read a few of the books.

I think anyone and everyone who has thought that a book should be challenged or ban should read this book! You can‘t let one person ruin it for everyone else.

Amy Anne and her friends saw the need to stand up and fight for what they wanted. Books are the gateway to our imagination. Books help the mind to grow and learn and to take you places that you never thought you could go.

Read the book...you won‘t be sorry.

julesG What are you doing with my cat?! Gosh, they could be twins. 6y
Mdargusch I loved this book! 6y
Mowen036 @julesG I just looked through your feed and your cat looks about how mine did a couple years ago! As he‘s gotten older (he‘s 6 1/2) he‘s gotten darker. My Siamese isn‘t a full one so he doesn‘t have that Siamese temperament but his sister who is a tortoise shell calico has it. 😬 6y

Because people compared Property of the Rebel Librarian with this book, I had to read it for myself. While the theme and the idea of a banned book library out of a locker are the same, the books are very different. This one is for a younger audience, and much more measured. Rebel Librarian is more radical and "fight the power". I loved both but Rebel Librarian spoke to my inner revolutionary more.
