Welcome back to the irresistible world of Greenglass House where thirteen-year-old Milo is, once again, spending the winter holidays stuck in a house full of strange guests who are not what they seem. There are fresh clues to uncover as friends old and new join in his search for a mysterious map and a famous smugglers lost haul. This exciting sequel to a beloved book that was praised in a starred review as "an enchanting, empowering read" is sure to thrill both fans and newcomers. Like its predecessor, it's a smart, suspenseful tale that offers ghosts, friendships, and a cast of unforgettable characters, all wrapped up in a cozy mystery.

I absolutely love this series. Milo and Meddy are the best, and I adore Clem and Georgie, and Milo‘s parents...and this installment introduces a whole new set of interesting characters. Set in a couple days leading up to Christmas, it has just enough holiday feeling to make it feel right for now.

I‘m a bit late to the party, but I‘m joining @Andrew65 and co in the #DashingDecember readathon.

I want to finish my Greenglass House series read/reread, and complete at least two bingo lines for #bookspinbingo. I‘m struggling to find time to read with holiday and family obligations (feeling a lot of pressure to make Christmas good for the kiddo), so hopefully these fairly modest goals are attainable.

Andrew65 Can join in at any time. Good luck 😊👍 4y

I really do love the Greenglass books by Kate Milford. I hope she comes out with more of them. I find that they tackle serious issues (adoption and all that it can mean for the adoptee) that some kids deal with on a daily basis. Milford never shies away from the hard emotions, I love that. This is an empowering book that tells a great story and provides outlets and covert advice to kids struggling. Highly recommend!

SamanthaMarie Also Jonathan got sick from our terrible house guests and I'm not feeling too hot myself so a relaxing day in bed is on the docket. 6y

I was about 100 pages in when our house guests from hell showed up. Two boys about Jonathan's age... I have never heard so much whining, screaming, fighting, and bullying. I'm all for hands off parenting to foster independence... but I'm not for negligent parenting that causes your kiddos to be monsters. And I *hate* when kids push, punch, and make fun of my little guy just because he is more reserved and not as athletic. *Steps off soapbox* cont.

SamanthaMarie Anywho. Recovering by picking this read back up and letting Jonathan play with his duplos to his heart's content. We also had a playdate with our in town friend group this morning and I was reminded that there are SO many good kids in the world. So that was heartening. But I need naps, books, and chocolate after the past three days. Ooofdas! 6y
DivineDiana Well, that wasn‘t a fun play date or I mean house guests‘ visit! ☹️ (edited) 6y
SamanthaMarie @DivineDiana It was hard!! They were here for three days 😳😭 I really like my friend as a person... but maybe not as a parent. 😖 6y

SamanthaMarie @Spencer_Labbe Agreed!! It is a lovely one. 6y
RebL Both the pic and description so full of shared experience. I once stupidly made my son apologize to a kid who smashed a LEGO creation. My son yelled at the kid and the kid‘s mother demanded the apology. After however many years, I‘d still like to take that apology back. 6y

I must be on a kid lit kick (probably because I am uber stressed out and had the worst panic attack I've had in years, this morning.) I read the first of this series back in... October? November? Then tried to listen to this on audiobook loan through the library but I'm just much better at hard copy fiction. So excited to dive in!

Itchyfeetreader Sorry to hear about your arrack. Go easy and look after yourself 🤗 6y
SamanthaMarie @Itchyfeetreader Thank you so much! I have gotten better over the years at resting afterward which I'm counting on helping me so that another one doesn't come again any time soon. 6y
Crazeedi @SamanthaMarie oh no so sorry to hear this! I had a terrible panic attack several years ago while driving, I thought I was dying, seriously. I got pulled over, and told my husband I loved him as he called 911. So scary, have had other smaller ones. So please know I'm thinking of you 6y

SamanthaMarie @Crazeedi Yes! I used to have to call 911. And then I got a therapist and naturopath and quit caffeine and most sugar and gluten and dairy (most of the time) and I do much better now. But it still comes out of nowhere occasionally and it is so scary and stressful. Especially when Jacob is gone and it's just me at home with little Jonathan. But I did okay and we just spent most of the day in bed reading and playing with toys :) 6y
SamanthaMarie @Crazeedi Thank you for sharing your experience. It truly helps me to know I'm not alone and that in some ways it is almost "normal" since so many others have experienced it as well. How did you fare your big snowstorm?? 6y
Crazeedi @SamanthaMarie we got 6 or 7 inches of heavy snow. The piles froze on the car we had in the driveway! Its like -1 farenheit here this am! Brrrr 6y
Crazeedi @SamanthaMarie and I just realized you have 2 little boys? Ok I will be writing to you this week! 6y
SamanthaMarie @Crazeedi Oh my goodness, that is so cold!!! Yikes. We dropped down to 28 last night. Cold for us. But no snow sadly haha. And no!! Just Jonathan. He is 3 :) and then Jacob is my husband who is deployed. It can be hard to keep their J names sorted. People mix them up all the time haha! 6y
Crazeedi @SamanthaMarie omgosh I've been calling your little boy Jacob, oops! I'm so sorry!!!!!! I'll keep it straight now🤪 6y
SamanthaMarie @Crazeedi I totally knew what you meant, it is all good!! Your life has been so busy!! 6y

I had no idea there was a second book, so when I stumbled across it at BN I actually squealed (which is not me at all). I read this in about three days and loved it. Easily as good as the first book.
The kid friends who got the first book from me visited yesterday. Oldest (17) told me how much she adored the book. I excused myself and returned with this one, put it in her hands, and she squealed, then started reading inmediately. Win.

ravenlee Blurry picture! Sorry. But that's the gap where I've lent out this book to the kid friends so they can all enjoy it too! 7y
Clare-Dragonfly That's awesome! Way to share the love of reading. 7y

And now for my favorite indoor reading spot at Casa Tubac. The only trouble with this one is how easy it is to drift off to sleep.

This is my favorite semi-outdoor reading spot at Casa Tubac. It was made for their cat, Fancy, who used to be an outside cat when they lived in Dallas. Dallas doesn't have coyotes though.

The plot is similar to Greenglass House in that unexpected guests show up, get stranded, and are all looking for something special. What makes Ghosts different is the fascinating introduction of the concept of the Raw Nights performers, a troupe of “actors” who travel around performing and telling stories during the “raw nights” before Christmas when magic is wild. As a lover of folklore, this aspect of the story totally sucked me in.

After finishing the first book, I picked up the second immediately and devoured it in a day. This one was not quite as magical as the first, but I appreciated the expansion of the universe and folklore surrounding Greenglass House. And the mystery definitely twisted and turned! #kidlit #middlegrade #mystery

batsy This series sounds great! Must check it out. 7y

Overall, this was good, although a little too long. I love the atmosphere in both Greenglass books, and I like how a variety of complex ideas are woven together to make it more than just a simple mystery.

The biggest problem with this book was finding the time to read it!! I was engaged from the start and just wanted to be able to finish it, but life kept getting in the way. It is the 2nd book in the series. I intentionally didn't read the 1st one because I wanted to see if this one could stand on it's own. It did and made me want to read the 1st one. An engaging #middlegrade mystery.

Nebklvr I didn't know another one was coming!! 7y

Started this #ARC and am already drawn into it. #middlegrade

Peddler410 I picked this ARC up at ALA and just the other day bought the first book. 7y
Lmstraubie @Peddler410 I chose to read this one without having read the first to see if I could. The author has done a fantastic job of allowing you to understand this story without needing to read the first. She gives just enough of the background info. 7y
