Nicola Upson blends biography and fiction, excitement and menace, and a touch of Alfred Hitchcock in Fear in the Sunlight, a mystery starring real-life writer Josephine Tey. Summer, 1936: Josephine Tey joins her friends in the resort village of Portmeirion to celebrate her fortieth birthday. Alfred Hitchcock and his wife, Alma Reville, are there to sign a deal to film Josephines novel, A Shilling for Candles, and Alfred Hitchcock has one or two tricks up his sleeve to keep the holiday party entertainedand expose their deepest fears. But things get out of hand when one of Hollywoods leading actresses is brutally slashed to death in a cemetery near the village. The following day, fear and suspicion take over in a setting where nothingand no oneis quite what it seems. Based in part on the life of Josephine Teyone of the most popular, best-loved crime writers of the Golden Age, Nicola Upsons Fear in the Sunlight features legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock as a prominent characterand features the classic suspense and psychological tension that fans of Hitchcock films love.

Stumbled across this 4th volume in Upson‘s series featuring Josephine Tey (!) and her posse as she plays detective in the golden years between world wars. Little catty throwaway lines on Dorothy Sayers and other writers, star studded IRL cameos, and meticulously researched crimes that inspire Tey‘s cases got me started binge reading all 10 books. Can be uneven but what kept me going was the totally #queerlitsy soap that‘s her love life throughout

Tonton that‘s a current running through the whole series. Plus special guest in the 10th book (my first girl crush) in photo! 2y

This was my first book with Josephine Tey and it is the 4th in this series. I enjoyed it, it sounds rather glamorous with the Alfred Hitchcock at a party for Josephine's 40th birthday. She is a writer and Alfred wants to make one of her books into a movie. There are some murders, Chief Inspector Penrose happens to be there as he is friends with Josephine. It also goes to the future, there is a murder there that may be connected to the old murders.

emmaturi So the connections are eventually made and is truth comes out. I would definitely read more in this series. 3y

Waiting outside on a bench part shade, part sun. Sun was not expected today! It feels wonderful. Already walked for today. My husband‘s cataract surgery takes about 2 1/2 hours total so I am hanging out reading & plan to take another walk. 📚🚶‍♀️🌞 #bfc21

#HeyJune #day5 #SheLovesYou There‘s a really sweet but forbidden romance in this series. Marta has made it clear to Josephine that she loves her, but not only is a relationship between two women impossible in Inverness, Scotland where Josephine lives, Marta is also the partner of Lydia, one of Josephine‘s best friends. In this book, the 4th in the series, they finally give in to their attraction.

Cinfhen Great choice!! And I‘ve missed you 💕 6y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen I‘ve missed you too lovely! Been pretty awful health wise the last few weeks🤒 6y

This is Bk4 in the Josephine Tey series & is by far the best. This is not a conventional murder mystery at all, the confession is in the first chapter but you don‘t know whose it is, the murder doesn‘t happen till over halfway through the book & the identity of the killer was a huge shock, to me at least. Even though the first half has no murder, her setting of the scene is written so well, it‘s totally riveting. Highly, highly recommended.10⭐️

Abailliekaras Sounds amazing! 6y
JazzFeathers Ii've read the seventh and it was amazing. The revelation of the killer was shocking too. I need to read this series from the beginning 6y
Lizpixie @Abailliekaras The whole series is honestly one of the best English historical crime novels I‘ve ever read. @JazzFeathers you really should start at the beginning, the first book was fantastic and it also gives a lot of backstory to the relationships between Josephine & Archie, Archie & the Motley‘s & most especially Josephine & Marta. 6y
Abailliekaras @Lizpixie totally stacked! 6y

3am here in Sydney & I‘m freezing my arse off. It‘s 7C (44F for all you Americans)& that may be not that cold to people who live in snowy parts of the world, but to aussies, it‘s nut freezing weather. Especially when you forget to turn your heating on because you‘ve been under blankets most of the day with the flu that keeps on giving. On a better note, this book is fantastic! Pairing it with my favorite chamomile, honey&vanilla tea & a ugg boots.

cobwebmoth I hope you feel better soon! 6y

Starting the next Josephine Tey book by Nicola Upson tonight. I‘m still having trouble with sticking to a book, part of it is my eyes are still an issue but also I‘m in one of those ruts where it has to be the exact right book or I can‘t continue with it. I have a stack of 15 books that I‘ve read at least the first chapter before giving up on it. Hopefully this one will satisfy, I‘ve enjoyed the first 3 books in this series. #damnbookslumps

JazzFeathers I've read only one of these books, the 7th. Unwittingly stumbled upon it on NetGalley and absolutely LOVED it! I need to buy the rest of the series 😍 6y
Jeg I‘ve got some of hers in my TBR pile. 6y

My wonderful mum went shopping at a library sale yesterday and bought these for a whopping £1.65

I haven't read any of them and they are a mix of cozy crime, spec fic and pastoral...interesting 😊

Balibee146 I have The Dig on Kindle :-) 7y
Bambolina_81 @Balibee146 It sounds pretty dark! It's only a shorty so should be an interesting read. 7y
Andrew65 Nicola Upson writes a good Historical Mystery, interesting how her central character is the author Josephine Tey. However not read 7y

Bambolina_81 @Andrew65 I'm quite intrigued by it. It's also set in Portmerion where I visited earlier this year, I collect books set in places I have travelled to 😊 7y
Andrew65 @Bambolina_81 it always helps if you can picture the place from memory - just adds to the story then. 7y
batsy What an interesting selection. The Dig sounds intriguing. 7y
