A fantastic illustrated edition of all the magical creatures in the world of Harry Potter. Some of these are mentioned in the books and some I‘ve never heard about

The amazing illustrations are by Olivia Lomenech Gill that has really captured the animals

3✨It has been a week! I finished this early this week as an audiobook. I liked it this way because each creature they mention had a sound clip of what they should sound like. I‘m sure there is pictures in a physical book so I‘ll have to look at that in the near future. Just mentions different fantasy creatures in the Harry Potter universe.

A fun enough read. I felt like I wasn‘t getting any reading done (I wasn‘t) over the weekend but I‘m catching up a bit.

For a HP fan this is nice. I liked some of the marginal notes from “Harry” and “Ron.” Might look into the illustrated edition at some point.

I absolutely adored this illustrated edition of fantastic beasts for comic relief . There is a wonderful illustration for each and every beast, There was even a huge pull out of a Ukrainian iron belly dragon.
A definite feast for the eyes 🤩

Although hard to choose My fav was probably the Basilisk picture .... may have something to do with our ‘snakes in the city ‘ addiction on Nat Geo wild 😂

Linsy @Sharpeipup Agreed. There are more in my ebook than the first version I read, but it almost seems like at least a simple line drawing should be mandatory for each one! 4y

I wonder if the puffskein was an inspiration for the tribbles on Star Trek. I definitely feel like this year the pogrebin demon has been following a lot of people and a lot of kicking has been going on. And out of all the beasts in this book if I had to choose one to live my life out as it would definitely be the fwooper- to be able to drive a person to insanity through song sounds awesome.
Thank you for this great book suggestion @Linsy

The intricacies of wizard law are delightful — and entirely fraught — in this intro. My favorite was the ghosts appalled reaction to the “Council‘s unashamed emphasis on the needs of the living as opposed to the wishes of the dead” and “the world‘s largest kelpie” — the Loch Ness Monster — developing “a positive thirst for publicity.” 😆 #potteraday

Today #PotterADay meant to be only for the Foreword, but I couldn't help myself and read all introduction.

This is my first time reading this, I love the Foreword by Newt Scamander and the explanations of the efforts determining what falls under the definition of beast (as a lawyer I'm a sucker for discussions about terminology 🙈). It also explains how they manage to hide the beast from muggles.

Side note about JK Rowling in the comments👇🏻

nanuska_153 The full royalties go to Comic Relief and Lumos. It's a relief that JK Rowling doesn't directly benefit from it (although Lumos is her foundation), after her reiterated comments about the trans community I was struggling to give her (more) money. I donated to the Marmaid foundation a bit more than the cost of the book to try to somehow bring equilibrium to the Force, but to know that part of it goes to Comic Relief makes me very happy ♥️ 4y
Linsy I love all the little details too! I would love to know any insights you have coming from a law background. And I feel you with the whole where to put your money when you want to enjoy something but not necessarily support it‘s creator. Knowing the proceeds go to charity definitely does my heart good! (edited) 4y
nanuska_153 @Linsy Well,as the book says, the definition is important because your classification as beast would have an implication on your rights.I often considered this when reading the series, wizards clearly have the most rights, then you have Goblings that the HP series you get they are kind of inferior, but still have jobs and input in the Government;then Buckbeack it's clearly considered an animal;(continue in another 👇🏻you'll regret asking 😅) 4y
See All 6 Comments
nanuska_153 @Linsy and then starts getting interesting:Aragog is also clearly considered a beast, but he capable of reasoning and having a conversation, surely should have more rights? Then Centaurs, seem to be beast, but they have informally recognised their capacity to govern themselves (I think of them as traveler communities, with their own rules and their own social system). And most interesting of all:house elfs, which clearly have no rights or protection 👇🏻 4y
nanuska_153 According to the FB book under the definition of beast they should have been classified as beings and not beast, but it's not clear if they have an even inferior position than a beast:Buckbeack had a trial to classify him as dangerous, but Wizarding families are allowed to dispose of House Elfs as they want, they are some kind of property that you can abuse as much as you want,no laws against owning or trafficking like with dragons or other beast 4y
nanuska_153 and muggles seem to be considered some kind of in between too! Wizarding families(you can even see it on certain comments of the Weasleys) seem to consider them somehow as intellectually inferiors, something like a very intelligent ape, but still an ape xD that's me trying to summarise the legal implications @Linsy 😅 4y

Magizoology readathon.....the top 4 are for OWLs, the bottom 3 for NEWTs. Some overlap with #bookspin.
Dark and Deepest Red — charmed shoes for Charms
In Defense of Food — Herbology
Buffalo for the Broken Heart — Magical Creatures
A Secret History of Witches — Potions
A Charmed Life — Charms
Braiding Sweetgrass — Herbology
The Jumbies — Magical Creatures

I have a lot of books with magical creatures, that was the hardest subject to pick.

I recently came across #magicalreadathon, & I really liked the idea of reading certain subjects in order to complete OWLs & NEWTs & get a wizarding “career.“ I visited the site, I read the career guide, & try as I wanted to pick something else, I fell back on Magizoology. It feels cliche, but it's super right for me at the same time. However, I didn't like the OWL prompts. The Herbology OWL is just reading a book that starts with M? No way. ⬇

mrsmarch 👉🏻So I am going to take the subjects provided by #magicalreadathon, and assign my own “reading,“ and consider myself accomplished that way. The OWL subjects for Magizoology are Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, Herbology, and Potions and the NEWTs are Care of Magical Creatures, Charms, and Herbology. I've combed my shelves and I think I have my “reading list“ ready..... (edited) 5y
