The Time Traveller's Guide to Restoration Britain
The Time Traveller's Guide to Restoration Britain | Ian Mortimer
12 posts | 9 read | 22 to read
The past is a foreign country: this is your guidebook. If you could travel back in time, the period from 1660 to 1700 would make one of the most exciting destinations in history. It is the age of Samuel Pepys and the Great Fire of London; bawdy comedy and the libertine court of Charles II; Christopher Wren in architecture, Henry Purcell in music and Isaac Newton in science - the civil wars are over and a magnificent new era has begun. But what would it really be like to live in Restoration Britain? Where would you stay and what would you eat? What would you wear and where would you do your shopping? The third volume in the series of Ian Mortimer's bestselling Time Traveller's Guides answers the crucial questions that a prospective traveller to seventeenth-century Britain would ask. How much should you pay for one of those elaborate wigs? Should you trust a physician who advises you to drink fresh cow's urine to cure your gout? Why are boys made to smoke in school? And why are you unlikely to get a fair trial in court? People's lives are changing rapidly - from a world of superstition and religious explanation to rationalism and scientific calculation. In many respects the period sees the tipping point between the old world and the new as fear and uncertainty, hardship and eating with your fingers give way to curiosity and professionalism, fine wines and knives and forks. Travelling to Restoration Britain encourages us to reflect on the customs and practices of daily life - and this unique guide not only teaches us about the seventeenth century but makes us look with fresh eyes at the modern world.

'Nor should we forget Marmaduke Craddock, who produces paintings of birds of such liveliness and colour that you cannot help but smile. True, most of them are ducks, so no one will ever compare a Craddock with a Rubens, but he has his place. You will know what I mean when you see one of his ducks.' #duckquotes @DuckOfDoom

One of Marmaduke Craddock's pictures posted above!

4 1/2🌟

DuckOfDoom Paintings of ducks can be as masterful and pretty as any other piece of art!! 🦆🦆🦆 6y

@TrishB I'm 37% through the book and this is how many post-it notes I've used so far!

I may be slightly biased though as this period of history is when my Master's degree in 18th century literature starts.

TrishB Sign of a good book though 👍🏻 6y

Every holiday we get a new audiobook to listen to - mostly to go to sleep to! This is the choice this time and I‘m enjoying it a lot so far.

This sentence...🤔. Makes me happy for ridiculous and very vulgar reasons 😜😝🤣

mjdowens 😳🤢 7y
gossamerchild @mjdowens yeah, it is kind of gross in any context. Apparently they used to distill chickens. To make liquor. Who knew? 🤷🤢 7y
mjdowens Hhhmmm...what a great cold killer right? Chicken liquor. 😂😂 7y

Okay, I've already been to England, but I would love to see Wales and Scotland (separate countries at this point, but ruled by the same king, according to Mortimer. I don't honestly understand the difference, but that's why I read!).

JenReadsAlot I went to Scotland and Wales last year - loved it! 7y
gossamerchild @JenReadsAlot oh, so jealous! I spent a semester in Ireland in college (in 2002), but never got to Scotland. Or Wales. 7y
JenReadsAlot I did Ireland and Scotland on one trip and then Scotland and Wales the next. It must have been awesome spending a semester there! 7y
gossamerchild @JenReadsAlot it was unbelievable. Loved it so much. It was a weird time to travel (4 months after 9/11) but definitely one of my favorite memories. 7y
