P.G. Wodehouse: A Life in Letters
P.G. Wodehouse: A Life in Letters | P G Wodehouse
6 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
This is the definitive edition of P.G. Wodehouse's letters, edited with a commentary by Oxford academic Sophie Ratcliffe. One of the funniest and most admired writers of the twentieth century, P.G. Wodehouse always shied away from the idea of a biography. A quiet, retiring man, he expressed himself through the written word. His letters - collected and expertly edited here - provide an illuminating biographical accompaniment to legendary comic creations such as Jeeves, Bertie Wooster, Psmith and the Empress of Blandings. Drawing on hitherto unpublished sources, these letters give an unrivalled insight into Wodehouse, covering his schooldays at Dulwich College, the family's financial reverses which saw his hopes of university dashed, life in New York working in musical comedy with Jerome Kern and George and Ira Gershwin, the years of fame as a novelist, and the unhappy episode in 1940 where he was interned by the Germans and later erroneously accused of broadcasting pro-Nazi propaganda. It is a book every lover of Wodehouse will want to possess.

I‘m dog earring my favorite quotes and this one makes the cut ? Totally how I felt with my 3 years of high school French. Sure, I can have a good convo in French with you…, as long as we talk pencils, bathroom locations, and how you‘re feeling (but I‘m lost if you‘re anything but “comme ci, comme ça” ?)

TheBookHippie #8 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 the fact that I don‘t keep track of what I‘ve read drives most people insane 🤷🏽‍♀️🤣❤️ 5y
TheAromaofBooks @TheBookHippie - I didn't used to, but I started to several years ago and now I'm tracking it like 7 different ways! 😋 5y

ljuliel Did you name your pup after the singer ? 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - Waylon yes (Waylon Jennings). Paisley no, but since we got her we've had multiple people ask if she was named for Brad Paisley 🙃 Actually chose Paisley because she's a blue merle, so a crazy pattern, and both border collies & paisley originated in Scotland lol 5y
ljuliel Oh, yea, I forgot Brad Paisley. He‘s one of the younger crowd. I grew up in a house where all the oldies were played. Waylon, Wilde , Jim Reeves, George Jones , Charlie Pride. I‘ve got some of those songs grooved I to my brain like the grooves on a record. 5y
TheAromaofBooks @ljuliel - my husband is way into old school outlaw country so we listen to a lot of Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, etc. His coworker named his daughter Everly after the Everly Brothers! 😁 5y
ljuliel Isn‘t that cute ? I‘ve never heard of anyone with that name. I like Willie Nelson a lot ! 5y
mabell Love PG Wodehouse! I would name him as a favorite too! 5y
TheAromaofBooks @mabell - he's kind of dangerous, though - I can't read his books in public any more because I start snorting with laughter and everyone looks at me weird. 5y
mabell Ha! So true! I read my first Terry Pratchett on a plane - don‘t worry about me I‘m just dying of laughter 🤣🤣🤣 5y
MemoirsForMe I must start my new Wodehouse book. I could use a good laugh! 😁😁😁 5y
TheAromaofBooks @UwannaPublishme - I hope you enjoy it! His pacing can be a little... frenetic... but if you roll with it, things usually come together. 😁 And I seriously have stopped reading his books in public because they make me actually literally snort-laugh all too frequently. 5y
