Drifting House
Drifting House | Krys Lee
13 posts | 4 read | 21 to read
An unflinching portrayal of the Korean immigrant experience from an extraordinary new talent in fiction. Spanning Korea and the United States, from the postwar era to contemporary times, Krys Lee's stunning fiction debut, Drifting House, illuminates a people torn between the traumas of their collective past and the indignities and sorrows of their present. In the title story, children escaping famine in North Korea are forced to make unthinkable sacrifices to survive. The tales set in America reveal the immigrants' unmoored existence, playing out in cramped apartments and Koreatown strip malls. A makeshift family is fractured when a shaman from the old country moves in next door. An abandoned wife enters into a fake marriage in order to find her kidnapped daughter. In the tradition of Chang-rae Lee's Native Speaker and Jhumpa Lahiri's Interpreter of Maladies, Drifting House is an unforgettable work by a gifted new writer.

Pickpick

I‘ve just finished Krys Lee‘s short stories of Korea (N&S) and Koreans living in the US. She writes beautifully and her characters are so well-formed, her families & relationships are so messed up & real - when they do something shocking (and they do) you empathise rather than judge.

I may not hold onto every story, but The Goose Father and A Small Sorrow I loved. Drifting House will stay with me a long, long time. Definitely an author to watch.

Megabooks I really enjoyed this book too. 5y
rockpools @Megabooks She knows how to write Striking, doesn‘t she? 5y

Wow. The title story packs a punch.

A young boy tries to escape the North Korean famine with his siblings, haunted by everything he‘s seen and done.

And the concept of a drifting house 😭.

Felt a lack of short stories in my diet. These are (possibly interlinked) stories set between South Korea and the USA. Beautifully written, and so far the Goose Father is the standout - a man gets a lodger, after his wife and children move to the States to get away from the pressure of the Korean school system. The young man turns up with his goose and just sparkles.

A lot going on this weekend, but I did manage to finish this short story collection. If you enjoyed reading about the Korean diaspora in Pachinko or enjoyed The Orphan Master's Son, you may want to check this out. She has an amazing voice!

HippieChickHomeschool I LOVED Pachinko! Adding this to my list! (edited) 7y
ApoptyGina69 Added! I loved Pachinko also and just today I finished The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon. Korean-American "second son" falls in love with Jamaican girl. 7y
Megabooks @HippieChickHomeschool @ApoptyGina69 I loved Pachinko (TSIAAS as well!), and this is a great collection to add more Korean perspectives to your literary "diet"! 7y
