The Death of Stalin -
The Death of Stalin - | Fabien Nury
9 posts | 9 read | 4 to read
On March 2nd 1953, in the middle of the night, Joseph Stalin, the "Father of the People," the man who reigned in absolute power over the people of Russia, had a stroke. He was declared dead two days later. Two days of fierce competition for the supreme power, two days that encapsulated all the insanity, the perversity and the inhumanity of totalitarianism. This is the story of a dictatorship plunged into madness. And it's all based on truth.

I loved the darkly humorous film and hadn't realised it was based on a graphic novel until I saw this in the library. Only a few pages in, but it's just as awfully comedic.
Even though it's a fictionalised account rather than historically rigorous, it's rather gut-churning that the atmosphere of death and fear under Stalin's regime is all to real.

#LibraryHaul Brought home a stack of graphic novels from the library. Quick reads, they're the snacks I probably shouldn't eat between meals if I want to finish my tea 😏

'The Death of Stalin' graphic novel is a good companion to the Iannucci satire and worth a quick read.

Pickpick

I will call this a low Pick, although I think the movie was better; there aren't many women in the story but the movie shows more of them.
#CanadaDayReadathon book 1

Samplergal I liked the movie. Clever. 6y
rabbitprincess @Samplergal Me too! Great cast, and I like Armando Iannucci 😊 6y

First up in my #CanadaDayReadathon: The Death of Stalin. Have to remember that the drawings will probably look more like the actual people and not the actors from the movie 😂

After seeing the fantastically funny film adaptation last night I need some modern Russian lit. As I've already read The Master and Margarita this year I may have got a little carried away in the library...

vivastory No such thing as too many books 7y
Kalalalatja @vivastory second that! ☝️ 7y
vivastory @Kalalalatja Kindred spirits! 😂 7y

Moray_Reads @vivastory @Kalalalatja that's all very well, friends but my library days there IS such a thing as too many! Thirteen is too many, I had to put one back 😑 7y
vivastory That's harsh! My library allows 200 items checked out 7y
Moray_Reads @vivastory 200!? That's it, it's official. There is no justice in this world 7y
vivastory I've never maxed out at 200 items. I've been close a few times. I take it as a personal challenge 7y
ApoptyGina69 My old library only allowed 10 items! They knew me so well, they‘d let me get away with 12 sometimes though. Russian Lit is one of my fave genres!! #currentread 7y
Moray_Reads @ApoptyGina69 it's on my the but I haven't managed to get to it yet! 7y
Leniverse @vivastory 200?! I was about to say that there's hardly any point to a limit that high. But then I figured they put it in place so as to not be a hindrance to normal borrowers, and to make sure people like you don't empty the shelves completely. 😂 7y
vivastory @Leniverse They could just hang a sign on the door that the library has been relocated to my house 😬🙃😂 7y
SaraBeagle I love, love 7y
Moray_Reads @SaraBeagle me too! It's one of my absolute favourites but I someone borrowed my copy and I never got it back so I'm relying on a library copy 😬 7y
saresmoore I haven‘t read Cancer Ward, but now I want to—and all of these, for that matter! My library limit is 50 books, but I carry a card for each of the members of our family... 😬 7y

Pickpick

Fast paced and good dialogue. Intense, but with a subject matter like this, of course it would be. 3.5/5
