Nights of the Living Dead
Nights of the Living Dead: An Anthology | Jonathan Maberry, George A. Romero
15 posts | 6 read | 16 to read
In 1968, the world experienced a brand-new kind of terror with the debut of George A. Romeros landmark movie Night of the Living Dead. The newly dead rose to attack the living. Not as vampires or werewolves. This was something new . . . and terrifying. Since then, zombies have invaded every aspect of popular culture. But it all started on that dreadful night in a remote farmhouse. . . . Nights of the Living Dead returns to that night, to the outbreak, to where it all began. New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry teams with the godfather of the living dead himself, George A. Romero, to present a collection of all-new tales set during the forty-eight hours of that legendary outbreak. Nights of the Living Dead includes stories by some of todays most important writers: Brian Keene, Carrie Ryan, Chuck Wendig, Craig E. Engler, David J. Schow, David Wellington, Isaac Marion, Jay Bonansinga, Joe R. Lansdale, John A. Russo, John Skipp, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Max Brallier, Mike Carey, Mira Grant, Neal and Brenda Shusterman, and Ryan Brown. Plus original stories by Romero and Maberry! For anyone who loves scary stories, take a bite out of this!

I think I‘m just gonna finish this out with zombies so please bear with me. This anthology had one rule and it was that all the stories had to be set around the same time as The Night of the Living Dead Movie. This story is about Harvey Lipschitz who changed his name to Harvey Lincoln due to the antisemitism he felt. His father who keeps calling him because his wife Rifka is sick and he can‘t get through to 911, can‘t help but think Harvey is 👇🏼

Reggie ashamed of their heritage. It all comes to a head when Harvey shows up to help his parents. It‘s too late as his mother had just died. From covering all the murders happening everywhere, Harvey tells his father that they need to burn the body despite knowing it goes against their Jewish faith. The father erupts out of his grief and disowns Harvey all the while not noticing his wife coming up behind him. She bites his neck and Harvey cremates 👇🏼 2y
Reggie both his father and mother. And as he leaves their house he is also killed by his own cameraman. 2y
kspenmoll I remember seeing The Night of the Living Dead movie- I am incredibly susceptible to visual art such as film, movie, etc. Have nightmares that feel real etc. So I avoid horror, even thrillers, but I love reading your posts. 2y
Reggie @kspenmoll lol, one of the only horror books I‘ve ever DNFed was Helter Skelter, about the Manson Murders. I kept having dreams he was trying to kill me and my brother. They just felt all to real. 2y
Suet624 @kspenmoll same here. 2y

One of my favorite zombie short stories, You Can Stay All Day by Mira Grant aka Seanan McGuire, which I read in the tagged book, is available on the Pseudopod podcast to listen to for free! Halloween is 3 months away. This would be a great mini warmup. Need a short zombie distraction from COVID-19? It‘s right here. You Can Stay All Day https://pseudopod.org/

MaleficentBookDragon Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to listen now.👩‍🎤🎧 4y

A great collection of zombie stories set during the same time as Romero's movie Night of the Living Dead. Short story collections can be uneven, but I enjoyed all of these!

First book of October down. I‘ve always loved zombies. I remember watching the original at my grandmothers house when I was a kid and not being able to sleep. This anthology is all based in the original movie universe. Some stories were soooo YOLO and full of testosterone I could only smile and laugh. And then the end stories were given weight by Mira Grant, Keith R.A. DeCandido, Chuck Wendig, and Neal and Brendan Shusterman. Pick!!!

AmyG The original is scary AF. I love the old horror movies. 5y
Reggie @AmyG my grandmother had a leaky faucet but it was soooo slow. As I was lying awake on the living room floor, I imagined each drop was a tap at the window from one of the dead outside the window. 😱 5y

Centique Unrelated except your story reminded me - when I was 10 my twenty ish sister had me, my little brother and two younger friends sleeping in the lounge at her flat and she played us Death Wish 2 and Poltergeist. 😱😱😱 I must visit her and slap her about the cheeks for that memory! 😂😂 5y
Reggie @Centique yowzas!!! Lol Death Wish 2, my grandpa loved Charles Bronson. And I personally love Poltergeist. There was probably no sleeping that night for ya‘ll. Lol 5y

Ummmm , tigers do not purr. Just sayin 🤷‍♀️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ummm... I think they do, I‘m pretty sure you can google it and watch them. 😉 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Well I just googled, apparently they can not really purr, but they do something that sounds an awful lot like it, but it‘s not considered a true purr. 🤷‍♀️ 7y
JoeStalksBeck @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I remember when we took Emma to the zoo that the trainer for the cheetah we seen said that the cheetah is the only big Cat that purrs 💕 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JoeStalksBeck That‘s what I read, but the videos of them pseudo purring are still darn cute. 😂 7y
