You never had to grow up, if you were spoiled enough. It was comforting.

When your mother goes to Greenwood, she simply goes to the closet and says, ‘Clothes, I‘m going to Greenwood. Anything that wants to go along, get on my back.‘
[Regarding Dabney‘s wedding bouquet]: “We‘ll have to doctor it a little, just as I thought,” Aunt Tempe said. “Take out those common snapdragons.”

I read this years ago in my twenties and loved it. This time I listened to the audiobook by Recorded Books and loved it even more. The narrator was spot on with her Mississippi accent (I'm from MS) and Welty paints such a beautiful, intricate portrait of a large family set against the backdrop of the South in the 1920s.
1. So many good ones. Hanging out with the kids in the neighborhood was always a favorite.
2. Yes! Older sister and younger brother. I had an older brother who passed 3 years ago 😢
3. 3 - 3.5 years ago?

I really enjoyed this! A richly layered family drama unfolds as the extended Fairchild clan gathers in the delta to celebrate Dabney's marriage to the overseer Troy. Told from shifting perspectives, tensions and bonds, hopes and losses are revealed. Welty captures how families can shape, support, and stifle. This was her first novel. I'm excited to read more of her work.
Annnnnd while we're dong challenges, why not do several? Here's my Day 2 entry for #readingwomenmonth - #classics by rad women!
This is one of the few novels I studied at grad school where studying it at grad school didn't suck all the joy out of reading it. I still vividly remember one scene where a family heirloom breaks, how Welty created such a dramatic moment of tension centering on something so ostensibly trivial. I can still hear that cracking, shattering.

The chaos of large families and wanting to have the perfect (Southern) wedding. Story was about the mundane, everyday life tensions. I got a little confused at points but can be an enjoyable story.
I'm visiting her house this week. I'm absorbing a great story by her before I go.
