Love and Other Alien Experiences
Love and Other Alien Experiences | Kerry Winfrey

I'm never going outside again. Mallory hasn't left the house in sixty-seven days--since the day her dad left. She attends her classes via webcam, rarely leaves her room (much to her brother's chagrin), and spends most of her time watching The X-Files or chatting with the always obnoxious BeamMeUp on New Mexico's premier alien message board. But when she's shockingly nominated for homecoming queen, her life takes a surprising turn. She slowly begins to open up to the world outside. And maybe if she can get her popular jock neighbor Brad Kirkpatrick to be her homecoming date, her classmates will stop calling her a freak. In this heartwarming and humorous debut, Mallory discovers first love and the true meaning of home--just by taking one small step outside her house.

I like this cover much better than the one it shows on GR. I finished this just in time for my daily Afternoons with Andy (Ky governor) update. This is a cute YA book about a teen girl who is dealing with anxiety after her dad leaves their fam & never leaves the house. She gets nominated for homecoming court, & with the help of friends, slowly decreases her anxiety. Of course, there‘s some romance, too, towards the end. Unlike some YA books, 👇

Scochrane26 I think the anxiety is dealt with in a responsible way. There‘s a therapist involved & the MC uses her coping skills. My very small complaints are 1)the fact that she attends regular school on a laptop set up in class is unrealistic 2) why is she not on meds?! 3) her mom talks about putting her in a hospital but hasn‘t put her on meds? Going to use this for #readtheusa2020 for NM. (edited) 5y

This book was cute. It was a bit cliche and stereotypical, but I still enjoyed it.
I appreciate the effort she put into researching agoraphobia and trying to show how complex it is. It's much more than just a fear of leaving the house.

3.5/5 stars

Another Thriftbooks #bookhaul.
I have one more package to open, but I'm making myself read 3 books first. Then maybe I won't be as tempted to buy more.
We'll see how well that works. 😝

This is what our reviewer had to say about #LoveandOtherAlienExperiences by @kerrywinfrey "This novel was a sweet friendship story sprinkled with a bit of romance. I loved the diverse characters and the relatability of them."
