The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr
The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr | Frances Maynard
8 posts | 16 read | 24 to read
Funny, heart-warming and ultimately triumphant, The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr is the perfect story for anyone who doesnt quite fit in and for everyone who chooses not to. Elvira Carr is twenty-seven and neuro-atypical. Her father who she suspects was in the secret service has passed away and, after several Unfortunate Incidents growing up, she now spends most of her time at home with her overbearing mother. But when her mother has a stroke and is taken into care, Elvira is suddenly forced to look after herself or risk ending up in Sheltered Accommodation. Armed with her Seven Rules, which she puts together after online research, Elvira hopes to learn how to navigate a world thats full of people she doesnt understand. Not even the Seven Rules can help her, however, when she discovers that everything she thought she knew about her father was a lie, and is faced with solving a mystery she didnt even know existed . . .

A book with guinea pigs on the cover! 😍

This book is not like Eleanor Oliphant or current similar books. In her late 20s Elvira, who narrates, suddenly finds herself on her own after a lifetime of living in a very controlling environment. She isn‘t neurotypical, so the reader learns to see things through the eyes of an autistic person.

I thought this was fantastic.

And guinea pigs! ❤️❤️❤️

jillrhudy Is it just me or are titles these days really short (“Something”) or really long (“The Something Somethings/Somebodies of Somebody”) 5y

#BecauseofLitsy

So, I was going to wait until the end of the month to purchase it, but, I don't have that much patience. I purchased this because I saw a review on Litsy. 😁

Where's the love for Elvira (both here and in the story!)? What a great transformation of a character in horrible conditions. It was impossible for me to not root for her. :)

Reading this book, I was plagued by feeling it was remarkably akin to The Curious Incident of the Dog that Barked in the Night-time. Elvira is on the autism spectrum; she has trouble making sense of the world (thus the Seven Rules); she is faced by a mystery and lying adults. For me, not quite original enough. Am I wrong? I did enjoy it...sort of. (For readers looking for trigger warnings, there are 2 assault scenes that I found hard to take.)

Story of a woman (presumably on the autism spectrum) learning to be independent after her mother has a health incident. Heart-warming and funny for the most part, but also dark in places as Elvira faces some people who wish to make fun of or take advantage of her. She is an easy character to root for!

Borrowed my son's tablet to read the absolutely delightful tale of Elvira, who stole my heart from page one, and her journey of growth after the death of her overbearing mother. A MUST read!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was utterly charmed by this book. I loved getting to follow Elvira (Ellie) on her journey as she navigates some big life changes. With her mother in a nursing home, Ellie is in charge of her own life for the 1st time in her 27 years. Seeing the world through her eyes opened mine to things I often take for granted. Some readers may find this too saccharine, but for me it was just right.

Garbage is modeling my first ever Goodreads giveaway win! I've won a couple since but this is the first to arrive. Apparently it's had a title change since this ARC was printed? Starting this today!

minkyb What a name! 7y
monkeygirlsmama Your cat's name is Garbage?! 🙀I have to ask, how on earth did that come about? 😹 (edited) 7y
ElyssaReads @monkeygirlsmama part in honor of the cat Dwight tries to give Angela in The Office with the same name, part because my husband is not a big fan of cats but let me adopt one on the condition he got to name it :) 7y
monkeygirlsmama @ElyssaReads Well, alrighty then! Heehee It's a cute kitty with a unique name. You can't go wrong with that. 😸 7y
