So Much I Want to Tell You
So Much I Want to Tell You: Letters to My Little Sister | Anna Akana
14 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 9 to read
From Internet sensation Anna Akana comes a candid and poignant collection of essays about love, loss, and chasing adulthood. In 2007, Anna Akana lost her teen sister, Kristina, to suicide. In the months that followed, she realized that the one thing helping her process her grief and begin to heal was comedy. So she began making YouTube videos as a form of creative expression and as a way to connect with others. Ten years later, Anna has more than a million subscribers who watch her smart, honest vlogs on her YouTube channel. Her most popular videos, including How to Put On Your Face and Why Girls Should Ask Guys Out, are comical and provocative, but they all share a deeper message: Your worth is determined by you and you alone. You must learn to love yourself. In So Much I Want to Tell You, Anna opens up about her own struggles with poor self-esteem and reveals both the highs and lows of coming-of-age. She offers fresh, funny, hard-won advice for young women on everything from self-care to money to sex, and she is refreshingly straightforward about the realities of dating, female friendship, and the hustle required to make your dreams come true. This is Annas story, but, as she says, it belongs just as much to Kristina and to every other girl who must learn that growing up can be hard to do. Witty and real, Anna breaks things down in a way only a big sister can. Advance praise for So Much I Want to Tell You This book is filled with the kind of honesty, vulnerability, and determination that makes Anna such a captivating person. One warning: Youll want to hug her a lot while reading this.Natalie Tran, actress and comedian As a woman working in entertainment, Anna Akana is accustomed to feeling vulnerable. Which means that shes used to being brave. This book is a tribute to the duality of bravery and fear as told through Annas experiences to date.Hannah Hart, New York Times bestselling author of Buffering: Unshared Tales of a Life Fully Loaded Frank advice on how to live a productive, happy life . . . written in tribute to a fearless, talented, and bold sister.Kirkus Reviews

This was an easy read, full of advice about life and plenty of personal stories. It was very honest, especially about mental health issues.

#3books #ihated
I‘m a picky reader so I don‘t try many things I don‘t think I‘ll like. A Matter of Life was just meh. I tried to listen to Gilead. It just droned on & on and nothing happened. I can‘t understand the hype. (Sorry.) Anytime I think about the tagged book, I‘m annoyed, disgusted. If a book could be unwritten, I‘d pick this one.

I‘ve already reviewed this book but it was the first thing I thought of for #youandmebutmostlyme #musicalnewyear prompt. I found this YouTube star to be self-absorbed, particularly for the sensitive topic the book was alleged to be responding to, namely her sister‘s suicide. Do yourself a favor and pass this one up.

Cinfhen Always appreciate an honest review 💚 6y

This wasn‘t on my tbr. I chose it from the biography shelves at the library. The subtitle is deceiving. There‘s not a single letter to her sister, who committed suicide. The things she wrote about are not things a dead 13 year old would need to hear. It seems like a PR person told this YouTube star her next step was to write a book and the dead sister would draw readers. The book went on for chapters with no mention of the sister... (cont below)

megnews And then out of the blue she‘d be mentioned in a sort of offhanded way, like “oh yeah I was supposed to be writing about my sister.” I‘ve struggled with writing this review because I‘ve lost someone to suicide and everyone‘s grief is different. But this just seemed like self-serving exploitation to me. (edited) 6y

I‘ve been waiting to share my review of this book, but I just read this: When I was in my late teens, my relationship with food was so unhealthy that when I was broke, I would still go to expensive restaurants by myself and max out my credit cards on $300 meals. Late teens? Maxing? Credit cards? $300 Meals? Seriously? Ugh.

I finished reading my part of ”The Great Alone” that my friend and I are going to talk about on Monday and I didn‘t want to get ahead because I know I would spill something on accident. I decided to get started on this book. I have been really looking forward to reading it

My 14yo son asked for this book. He powered through it between stockings and supper at Grandma's. For three days now he's been sharing insights and wisdom from the book.

Some people go in busy weekend's away and don't even think about bringing books. I am not one of those people.
