Roughneck | Jeff Lemire

From the brilliant mind of Jeff Lemire, award-winning cartoonist of Essex County, Descender, and Underwater Welder, comes a new graphic novel about a brother and sister who come together after years apart to break the cycle of abuse and violence that has cursed their family. Derek Ouellettes glory days are behind him. His hockey career ended a decade earlier in a violent incident on ice and since then hes been living off his reputation in the remote northern community where he grew up, drinking too much and fighting anyone who crosses him. When his long-lost sister Beth shows up, on the run from an abusive boyfriend, the two escape to a secluded hunting camp in the woods. There, living off the land, they reconnect with each other, the painful secrets of their past and their Cree heritage, and start to heal. But Beths ex-boyfriend is hunting them. As he circles closer, he threatens to shatter this newfound peace and pull both Derek and Beth back into the world of violence and self-destruction theyve fought so hard to leave behind. Touching, harrowing, and complicated, Jeff Lemires Roughneck is a deeply moving and beautifully illustrated story about family, heritage, and breaking the cycle of violence.

Jeff Lemire delivers a stunning story and visuals with this graphic novel. His artwork is perfect for this story and his use of color brilliantly highlights key points and climaxes.

This story is full of sadness, regret, impossible decisions, and redemption. I loved it! 💚💚💚

A troubled woman leaves her abusive boyfriend and flees back to her small, Northern Canadian town where she finds her ex-hockey player of a brother who has troubles of his own. They hide out in the bush while the boyfriend is on his way to find the sister. There‘s some great family dynamics in here and the legacy it can have. Good, surprisingly emotional, stuff!! Pick!!! #24in48

Addison_Reads He wrote a graphic novel called Frogcatcher that I really enjoyed. I'll definitely check this one out. 5y
Eyelit I really like this one, too! 5y
TheLibrarian I love Jeff Lemire! He doesn't get enough recognition for how amazing he is. 5y

It‘s pretty amazing that the whole novel is done in mostly grey, white, and blue, but the simple usage of red on a singular character, signifying he is the bad guy, can have such a terrifying effect when you see red turn up on the next page. Nice! #24in48

Texreader Sounds like a very thoughtful effect. 5y
vivastory I really liked this one. I highly recommend Descender if you haven't read it. Also really dig 5y
Reggie @Texreader it was and it just builds and builds. 5y
Reggie @vivastory I‘ve only read his Sweet Tooth series. I‘ll definitely check out his other stuff. 5y

I very much enjoyed this story of a brother and sister coming together after years to challenge their inner demons together. The art style of this #graphicnovel is so perfect for the atmosphere and storytelling. The best part is that all of the Northern Ontario references, like where I grew up. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #canadianauthors #canada #northernontario #roughneck #jefflemire #books

The breakfast table this morning. The 7yo woke up with a fever so he‘s not going to school. That means keeping the 5yo quiet downstairs (he goes to PM kindergarten at 1130) with some painting and reading.

Jeff Lemire's creator-owned content always knocks my socks off. Roughneck hit home for me - I grew up in a small Manitoban town and the characters in this book are very relatable for me.

This is a dark, noir(ish) feeling story of failure and overcoming the vicious cycle of repeatedly doing the wrong thing.

@Jess7

Leniverse I read my way through Canada last year and the book I read for Manitoba was rather strange. 😂 Set a bit before your childhood, I imagine. 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @Leniverse Awesome! Yeah, the old school Mennonite farms in southern Manitoba can be pretty crazy to visit even today. I grew up near a few of them and would wrestle and play with with some of the boys. Stayed away from the daughters though...didn't wanna get shot at. 😂 7y
RealLifeReading I love Jeff Lemire's work! 7y

TricksyTails You know I'm a huge Lemire fan so I need to read this! #Stacked! I love how he rips out my heart and stomps all over it. 7y
batsy I went to university in Winnipeg for a few years! It was the most defining experience of my life 😁 Which Manitoba town did you grow up in, if you don't mind my asking? (Also, are you currently in Winnipeg? Re: that cafe picture you posted...) 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @batsy I live in Winnipeg. I grew up in a small town about 45 minutes east of Winnipeg called, Anola. Not even a town, really. More like a cluster of houses with a gas station and a lumber yard. 😂 7y
batsy Ah, ok! Thanks :) That's really interesting. 7y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @batsy I love living in Winnipeg. A little chilly in the Winters (it's currently -22°C) but I'm a pretty proud 'Pegger 🙃. Did you go to U of W or U of M? 7y
batsy @GrilledCheeseSamurai Tell me about those winters! 😂😂 It was a shock to the system coming from the tropics but I dearly love the Peg. I went to the U of W. Right now in Malaysia we're having a sort of bizarre cold spell, for our parts, where the temperature has dipped to 22 C 😳 It never does that, the lowest is always the high 20s. A friend in Wpg just reminded me that's is *minus* 22 there, & I was instantly reminded of what that felt like 😂 7y

The back and forth in this book's solid. I always fall immediately into Lemire's stories. The pulse of them, the art, the small towns done right.

Lots of travel this month, and that means I only managed to get through half my usual number of books. Jeff Lemire's graphic novel Roughneck stands out as a #Junewrapup favourite.

Lemire uses colour to great effect. Most of the art in this novel is in shades of black and blue, with brilliant red to accentuate bloody violence. Also, the flashback panels are in full colour; the time of childhood, before hopelessness set in.

Texreader The artwork sounds (and looks) amazing 8y

Essex County has long been my favourite of Jeff Lemire's many works. This new graphic novel reminds me of that early outstanding work, except with even better artwork. Addictions, dysfunctional families, and breaking the cycle of violence. Also hockey, northern communities, and lots of crunching through the snow. It's powerful and I loved it. 🇨🇦

This feels like an oddball among Lemire's work - ESSEX COUNTY and SWEET TOOTH, for example, are big stories fit beautifully into a few hundred pages of words and pictures. ROUGHNECK is an intense zoom-in on a relatively small story, but no less beautiful.

Two sibling—each scarred by growing up with an abusive, alcoholic father who indirectly caused their mother's desth—seek closure, and perhaps redemption in this graphic novel. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I love the snow scenes in this graphic novel. This is a story of family and overcoming the past, with an ex-hockey player alcoholic brother and an abused drug-addicted sister who reunite after many years. The flashbacks to the past are powerful, and the characters are expressive and real. Sorry about the lines in the picture: it is on the computer screen. [Read via NetGalley]

melrailey I think Jeff Lemire is one of the absolute best graphic novelists. Everything I've read of his is powerful. (edited) 8y
tjwill @melrailey I had never read anything by him before, but I'll definitely be on the lookout for more. Do you have a favorite? 8y
melrailey @tjwill The Complete Essex County and Underwater Welder are both great. I also recently read the first volume of Descender and it was very good. 8y
tjwill @melrailey Thanks! I'll look those up! 8y

Essex County is one of my favorite graphic novels of all time and Lemire's new book is a return to that kind of storytelling, to that magic. I'm so happy. (Releases in October.)
