The Massacre of Mankind
The Massacre of Mankind: Sequel to The War of the Worlds | Stephen Baxter
A sequel to the H.G. Wells classic THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, brilliantly realized by award-winning SF author and Wells expert Stephen Baxter It has been 14 years since the Martians invaded England. The world has moved on, always watching the skies but content that we know how to defeat the Martian menace. Machinery looted from the abandoned capsules and war-machines has led to technological leaps forward. The Martians are vulnerable to earth germs. The Army is prepared. So when the signs of launches on Mars are seen, there seems little reason to worry. Unless you listen to one man, Walter Jenkins, the narrator of Wells' book. He is sure that the Martians have learned, adapted, understood their defeat. He is right. Thrust into the chaos of a new invasion, a journalist - sister-in-law to Walter Jenkins - must survive, escape and report on the war. The Massacre of Mankind has begun.

Equal parts amazing (the attack on New York) and silly (the lead character's absurd "mission" and how it ultimately plays out). I never would've given it a chance if I hadn't stumbled across the hardcover at the Dollar Tree(!), and while I'm not sorry I read it I certainly won't seek out Baxter's other Wells sequel (to The Time Machine). Worth a look for the curious, but I found it entirely too uneven. #sciencefiction

Starting a new book (Review of the last is on my blog!), and it‘s making me realize it‘s been like 15 years since I read War of the Worlds! So cool to have a “sequel” of sorts though. I might have to backtrack and reread the original...

Also pictured: my attempt at a summer drink (rose and strawberries 😂). There‘s a bar with amazing sangria that‘s walking distance but my neighbor and sangria partner is on vacation so it just doesn‘t feel right!

mabell It looks yummy! 6y
Zelma Mm, sounds good! My latest drink has been Relax Riesling with sliced apples in it. Not much for sweet wine, but it‘s a perfect poolside drink on vacation. 6y
heikemarie @Zelma I‘m not usually a sweet wine drinker either! This summer weather has got me drinking it though! 6y

Sequel to HG Wells's "The War of the Worlds" is both admirable and slow going. It succeeds in terms of style and theme, and is very interesting in its speculations about how Wells's Martian invasion would have changed the early 20th century. But the characters aren't so much characters as observers, which for me was distancing, and at nearly 500 pages strained my interest.

readinginthedark Nice review! I got so much detail out of this. 7y

swynn Me too! Sort of art decopocalypse, yeah? It's by Justin Erickson, who is new to me but I sure wouldn't mind seeing more of his work. 7y

GarthRanzz I still haven‘t finished this one. 7y
swynn I was sufficiently interested in how he was going to resolve everything though that I stuck around. But there were a few points where I considered bailing. 7y

#TBRtemptation post 1! This is the sequel to "The War of the Worlds". It takes place 14 years after the invasion. Machinery looted from the war-machines has led to technological leaps forward. Earth is safe thanks to its germs. When another launch from Mars is seen, no one worries. But Walter Jenkins thinks that the Martians have learned and adapted. And oh have they! #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

monkeygirlsmama I saw something about this the other day. Having just read War of the Worlds earlier this year, I‘m game for checking this one out. That it‘s authorized by H.G. Wells‘ estate gives me hope it might be a good follow up. 👍 7y

#thehubisgone read up to page 117 , was hoping to get up to 140 tonight but I'm getting a headace 😞,
One thing I can say is that it's slow getting into but it's picking up slowly the more you read.

I actually just got it to day and started it ,requested it from Blogging For Books, kind of slow right now,but it's interesting at the same time. Hopefully it'll pick up the more I read it , plus it's one of the books I plan to read for #thehubisgone

The book itself was very *very* well written. It did justice to H.G Wells and expanded the story in ways you never knew you wanted till you read it. With that said the story itself didn't quiet captivate me the way I wanted. This book, for me, is a true case of 'it's me not you'.

Side note: if you enjoy classic literature and are looking for something fresh, this book will be a wonderful fit for you :)
