The Billionaire's Vinegar
The Billionaire's Vinegar: The Mystery of the World's Most Expensive Bottle of Wine | Benjamin Wallace
6 posts | 10 read | 12 to read
Part detective story, part wine history, this is one juicy tale, even for those with no interest in the fruit of the vine. . . . As delicious as a true vintage Lafite. BusinessWeek The Billionaires Vinegar, now a New York Times bestseller, tells the true story of a 1787 Chteau Lafite Bordeauxsupposedly owned by Thomas Jeffersonthat sold for $156,000 at auction and of the eccentrics whose lives intersected with it. Was it truly entombed in a Paris cellar for two hundred years? Or did it come from a secret Nazi bunker? Or from the moldy basement of a devilishly brilliant con artist? As Benjamin Wallace unravels the mystery, we meet a gallery of intriguing playersfrom the bicycle-riding British auctioneer who speaks of wines as if they are women to the obsessive wine collector who discovered the bottle. Suspenseful and thrillingly strange, this is the vintage tale of what could be the most elaborate con since the Hitler diaries. Updated with a new epilogue.

Mehso-so

I am a bit of a wino so the case was more interesting to me than I think it would be to non wine folk. But, while the scandal makes a good story I feel an article or essay would have been enough and I was left hanging by ending. And apparently my lack of posting has gone noticed @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks thank you for the valentine 💜 I‘ll be around more I promise 😻📚📚📚📚

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks You‘re welcome!!! We have missed you!! Looking forward to seeing your posts! 💞 7y

I'm #UnderPressure to get started on this book club pick.

My book club has been together for 20 years and we are having an anniversary weekend getaway in Canadian wine country to celebrate. It's two weeks away and I can't wait!

#anditsaugust #drinksoncovers 🍾I'll be honest, I actually bought this book entirely because it showed up in an episode of Leverage in season 5, and I was really curious. 🤗 @RealLifeReading

I know that goodreads depends on ads to support its site and everything. But recently they have had one that has been bothering me. It the ad for the Bragg body slimming drink. Many people, myself included, who visit the site have body issues and use gr as a safe place. But now it makes me feel upset to see that ad. I asked gr to take it down. Am I being self righteous in asking them to take it down?

britt_brooke I think you did the right thing! 7y
AmandaL No. I think it's ridiculous that you can't even go on goodreads without having that stuff shoved in your face. I make a habit of blocking ads like that on Twitter and Pinterest. Goodreads should have the option of not seeing ads you find distasteful too. 7y
Zelma You're not wrong, but it may not matter if you complain. Goodreads is now owned by Amazon, so I expect to see more ads, not fewer, in the future. 7y
mjdowens Heck no! I block all that crap as much as possible. I like to watch documentaries on YouTube and the forced ad commercials irritate the crap out of me! 7y
