The Time It Never Rained
The Time It Never Rained | Elmer Kelton
4 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
To the ranchers and farmers of 1950s Texas, man's biggest enemy is one he can't control. With their entire livelihood pegged on the chance of a wet year or a dry year, drought has the ability to crush their whole enterprise, to determine who stands and who falls, and to take food out of the mouths of the workers and their families. To Charlie Flagg, an honest, decent, and cantankerous rancher, the drought of the early 1950s is a foe that he must fight on his own grounds. Refusing the questionable "help" of federal aid programs, Charlie and his family struggle to make the ranch survive until the time it rains again-if it ever rains again.

#junebookbugs Day 18 My dad was an avid reader. He would read anything, but loved westerns. After a long day of work, he spent his evening reading. Just like many of us, he would stay up late finishing a book even though his day started early. He also reread books often. I know he contributed to my love of reading. The tagged book is one of his favorites. #fathers #honorarylitten

Bailedbailed

After the preachy anti-gov forward about how ranchers in west TX are heroes for persisting in an occupation that obviously isn't supported by the physical environment, then a sexist paragraph featuring the main character, I am bailing in the prologue. Clearly a product of its time & place, but I don't need to read it. Too bad, because I enjoy novels that feature the west. 😖

And totally switching gears, because I do love a good western and this one is supposed to be a classic.

Tamra This one I had to buy new. I bet I looked for two years in used book shops for it. 8y

My husband and I went on a mini-vacation this weekend and I found a little bookstore to visit. I managed to control myself and only pick up a few books. The Time It Never Rained was my dad's favorite Kelton book so I picked it up for myself. Most Westerns make me think of my dad, but Kelton's books even more so. #bookhaul #mydadwasacowboy
