Jelly Bean Summer
Jelly Bean Summer | Joyce Magnin
7 posts | 4 read | 13 to read
Sometimes a new point of view is closer than you think... Joyce is desperate to get out of the room she shares with her older sister. All she wants is some peace and quiet, not the kind of quiet that fills the space left by her missing brother. It's the kind where you can breath deep and see the stars. So she moves to the roof. Up there it's nothing but blue sky. Blue sky and...another roof dweller? Joyce soon discovers she's not the only one who's been driven to rooftop living. With the help of a pair of binoculars, a sketch pad, and a pen, Joyce makes an unexpected friend and sets in motion a summer she'll never forget.

This view of a summer during the Vietnam war from the perspective of a younger girl is really impressive. I am not positive, but it seems as though this may be nonfiction based on the author‘s name and the names in the story. This really deals with quite a lot for a book for a young audience and it is truly unique. I highly recommend this book.

A great YA book to start my summer break. Set in the 1960's, the young narrator spends her summer trying to navigate difficulties with her parents, sister, and friends. I found the narrator refreshing and honest. She reminds me a lot of Mo from Three Times Lucky. I'll be adding this one to my classroom library! #summerreading2017

mrp27 I love Mo and the Tupelo series! 8y

I thought this was a cute and fun read, which also managed to touch on grief, loss, and war, in a middle grade appropriate way. Magnin nailed the child POV - at times it felt like the protagonist (Joyce) was talking to a friend, or writing a journal. ❤️ (check out the review on my blog for more info - http://bookishbron.blogspot.com.au/2017/05/review-jelly-bean-summer-joyce-magnin...
