A Day Of Signs And Wonders
A Day Of Signs And Wonders | Kit Pearson
4 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Can your whole life change in a single day? Emily dreams of birds. She feels constrained by nearly everything—her overbearing sisters, the expectation to be a proper young lady, and even her stiff white pinafore. Kitty feels undone. Her heart is still grieving a tragic loss, and she doesn’t want to be sent away to a boarding school so far away from home. When the two girls meet by chance, on a beach on the outskirts of Victoria, BC, in 1881, neither knows that their one day together will change their lives forever. Inspired by the childhood of acclaimed Canadian artist Emily Carr, A Day of Signs and Wonders is a sensitive and insightful look at friendship, family, and the foundations of an artist, drawn over the course of a single day—a day in which a comet appears, an artist is born and an aching hole in one girl’s heart begins to heal.

Pickpick

An imagined day in the life of 9-year-old Emily Carr, who grew up to be Canada's best-known female artist. 1881 in Victoria, BC; friendship between two children dealing with difficult circumstances. It's a quiet story for children ages 8-12. 🇨🇦

Dragon When I first moved to Victoria, I knew an elderly gentleman who could remember seeing Emily Carr and her monkey. 7y
Lindy @Dragon Wow! She died in 1945, but I don't know if she still had a monkey then. 7y
Dragon Yes he was a child when he saw her and it was back in 2000 that he told me the story , I guess she was a bit eccentric. Who knows if he was remembering clearly. 7y

"Father wants us to only read stories that teach us to be good," said Emily. "He thinks fairy tales are too fanciful, but that's why I love them—they're full of magic.

LeahBergen Wow. 😆 7y
Lindy @LeahBergen Don't you think this looks like an Alice in Wonderland colouring book, not something from Grimms fairy tales? (Image from the Internet) (edited) 7y
LeahBergen @Lindy Totally. And I'm glad that you clarified that you don't own it! 😂 7y
