On Heroes and Tombs
On Heroes and Tombs | Ernesto Sábato
6 posts | 6 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
Sabato's dark, philosophical novel is woven around a violent crime committed by Alejandra, the daughter of a prominent Argentinian family. Alejandra's act entwines the lives of three men: her father, Fernanda Vidal, a man who believes himself hunted by a secret organization of the blind, her troubled lover, Martin and Bruno, a writer who loved her mother. Exploring the tumult of Buenos Aires in the 1950s, On Heroes and Tombs leads its reader into a world of passion, philosophy and paranoia.

Pickpick

The narrative didn‘t go where I expected it to.

It starts by describing how Alejandra shot her father in a locked room before burning it down with both of them inside it. I assumed the rest of the book would explain how we got to that point.
The story explains some of this, but not how we reached such a drastic end… it focused more on her lover, on their tumultuous relationship, and her fathers obsession with the blind.

“Bruno always says that unfortunately our lives are lived in the form of a rough draft. A writer can always revise something that‘s not perfect or simply toss the whole thing into the wastebasket. Not life: there‘s no way to correct or clean up or throw away what‘s already been lived. Do you realize how awful that is?â€

February is fast escaping me 🤣

I am half way through part 1 (of 4) for the book. It is really good, but I underestimated the length!

However, tonight I made my #Argentina dish for #FoodAndLit
This is Argentinian Chimichurri Chicken (with frozen chips. It is a weekday after all!) I don‘t know how authentic the dish is as a whole, but the sauce was delicious 🤤

Starting this for #FoodAndLit

Looks like it will be a long read! (My e-reader estimates 15hrs)
It is set in Buenos Aires and centres around Alejandra and her relationships with 3 men, and it seems we are starting with Martin‘s story.

I am looking forward to getting stuck into this one, although the conversation between Martin and Bruno is a bit confusing to start (and also got the encanto song stuck in my head 🤣)

Some bookstore love as well. This is Ateneo in Buenos Aires. It is a theatre converted to bookstore with a café on the stage.?
