I'll be getting on a plane tomorrow, so I'm reading this today. Ahh, life with panic disorder.
It's actually quite helpful so far. I've read a LOT of books on anxiety (even by reputable therapists) that outline quick fix practices that ultimately make things worse. This book's first aim is to debunk such practices. Leahy also distinguishes between different worry-related disorders without negating or overemphasizing any of them.
Notafraidofwords This sounds awesome. 8y
saresmoore @Notafraidofwords It was a Kindle deal yesterday and might still be on sale! 8y
LeahBergen Yep, I hear you! Anxiety and panic disorder over here, too. This should give you comfort ... I spontaneously got over my fear of flying. 🤔 8y

Notafraidofwords @saresmoore oh wow. Thanks ! I'm on it. 8y
saresmoore @LeahBergen That's amazing! I'm going to receive and internalize your peace-with-flying vibes now. I actually quite like traveling and adventures...panic disorder is just UGH. 8y
LeahBergen I love travel, too, and would get just so ANGRY when the anxiety kicked in. I'll be sending you good vibes! 😘😘 8y
MicheleinPhilly @LeahBergen Did you do anything specific to get over it? I'm a so-so flier but have had full blown panic attacks over it. 😞 8y
Cinfhen Safe travels..flying doesn't cause me panic but driving...you have no idea! It's terrible- it is such a daily ordeal😞sending love ❤️ 8y
LeahBergen @MicheleinPhilly I did. I got so bad that I would take an Ativan to fly. I switched to trying half of one when a whole one made me feel too loopy. I used the sub-lingual ones that work really fast so I then just CARRIED them with me. I still carry that pill bottle with 2 old Ativans in it when I fly. Just knowing they are there works wonders! Ha! I actually only had to use Ativan a couple of times and now I'm relatively anxiety free on flights. 8y
MyNamesParadise I have GAD and I worry all the time about everything 😞😞😞 8y
MicheleinPhilly @LeahBergen That's what I take too. I don't always need it when I fly but as I tell my doctor, "Having it on me is my security blanket." 8y
LeahBergen @MicheleinPhilly Exactly! 👍🏼 8y
LeahBergen @MyNamesParadise That sucks! ❤️ 8y
saresmoore @LeahBergen @MicheleinPhilly My mom has panic disorder, too, so she shared a similar phantom-placebo technique starting when I was young with innocuous things like Tums. It really works! I've had SEVERAL full-blown attacks on planes and in the airport, so I know it's not the end of the world, just maybe my dignity and sanity. 🙃 I'm facing uncertainty ftw! 8y
saresmoore @MyNamesParadise Get this book! It's much more practical in the GAD department than 8y
You Were Not Born to Suffer: Overcome Fear, Insecurity and Depression and Love Yourself Back to Happiness, Confidence and Peace
saresmoore @Cinfhen Thank you! And ugh, driving is the worst! I am fortunate to be able to spread out my errands, but I dream of a self-driving Tesla. 8y
LauraBrook I've got anxiety like crazy and the last time I flew (6 yrs ago?) I had my first full blown panic attack and didn't know what was happening to me. I've had several since then, so I'm sadly all too familiar now. Maybe I should talk to my dr about some meds? And I should probably read this book too, I could use the help. (edited) 8y
saresmoore @LauraBrook Ugh, I'm so sorry that you live with it, too! My mom took a variety of different daily meds over the years and they never quite worked for her, but having the emergency pill really helped her begin to manage the attacks. After years of watching her suffer, I developed a phobia of medication. Ha! I am liking this book because it's about learning how to use worry effectively, rather than eliminating it altogether (impossible). 8y
LauraBrook @saresmoore At least I'm in good company! I have a very low dose of Lorazepam that I can take daily if I want to (though I hardly ever do), but I think I need something on hand, just in case, for panic attacks. And you're right, it's impossible to eliminate the worry, so it might as well be a help vs a hindrance! 💖 8y
MicheleinPhilly @saresmoore Believe me I've spent more than a few flights breathing into a paper bag in the back with the flight attendants. In my pre-medication days. ☺️ 8y
saresmoore @MicheleinPhilly I think we should take this moment to thank flight attendants everywhere for keeping their shit together, day after day, in the most terrifying situation known to man...and all with a starched collar! 8y
MicheleinPhilly Oh definitely. Even without me and my crazy on board, the verbal abuse they take and the apparent unpopularity of basic MANNERS makes me want to give them all an award. 8y
Suet624 Best wishes to you tomorrow. I'll be keeping you in my thoughts. 8y
LauraBeth Thinking about you and hoping it goes well tomorrow 💕💕Another one here who panics when forced to fly. The husband's parents still live in NYC and I make him drive when we visit - as opposed to taking the two hour flight. I used to have to travel a lot internationally for work and would have to always arrange it so no one from the office was on my flight to see me. Heck - even seeing Littens post pics at the airport makes me panic 🤦♀️ 8y
EllieDottie This sounds really good 8y
saresmoore @Suet624 Thank you! ♥️ 8y
saresmoore @LauraBeth I know, right?! I had dreams about being a tester for experimental light speed travel pods. I woke up a little relieved and a little terrified. Haha! 8y
Hobbinol I haven't flown in over a decade now. Hope your flight was gentle. I admire you for trying... 8y
saresmoore @Hobbinol I do envy you for that. I've made it through the first leg and am still breathing! 8y
shawnmooney I am a panicky flier too. Take care! 😍😍😍 8y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore it's amazing how placebos can work. As a child I had terrible travel sickness, any transport even on ten minute journeys and it turned into a general travel anxiety issue that made the sickness worse. Then my mum told me shiny new coins were "magic". Problem solved, even now I keep one on a necklace when I travel! Hope the book and Litsy good vibes make things easier ❤ 8y
