Thank you @Grissy for everything!!! I love it all, my spooky dog also loved it! 😄 I cannot wait to read the books! I have not read Stolen tongues yet but it sounds very interesting and I am definitely going to put it on my TBR! #AllHallowsReadSwap2024

Gissy Hi! I didn‘t answer the post before because my Litsy name was wrong so @MaleficentBookDragon helped on that task. I‘m so glad to see you liked everything. I was worry you could be disappointed. I added some books from your tbr in my wish list too😃I will like to read some creepy or ghostly books during winter😳😂😂😂 2mo
Nazgul93 @Gissy I'm so sorry for getting your name wrong! And I was far from disappointed! I was super excited with all the stuff I got and I'm hoping to read the book you recommended this winter! 1mo

I loved this. A good old fashioned monster story. Well written and exciting. An earthquake releases the Crota from the underground cavern where it has been imprisoned for centuries. When some bodies are found horribly mutilated, people blame it on a bear. Then the sheriff has a run in with the Crota, but no one believes him.

I felt the story moved at a fast pace and was great. I definitely recommend this book.

Mehso-so

(1996) An earthquake in Missouri wakes an old and hungry creature, and our heroes scramble to stop it.

Earlier this year I read and loved Goingback's "Coyote Rage," so went looking for more. This is his first novel, which won a Stoker for Best First Novel, but it's a pretty conventional monster story, with bits inspired by Native American mythology. It delivers on its promises and the prose is energetic, but after CR I hoped for something more.

I enjoyed this book! It‘s like a horror movie from my childhood, complete with a scary monster, characters making stupid decisions, an abundance of gore, and too much testosterone, but it was fun. I loved the Native American mythology and the setting in nearby Missouri made it feel very familiar.

But @Reggie ... wtf does this cover have to do with anything? 😅 Sending it home to you tomorrow—thanks for sharing and sorry I‘m late! #LMPBC

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Reggie No worries. Lol, and I think the cover has to do with the monster eating someone and them reaching out for salvation maybe? Lol 4y
sprainedbrain @Reggie my son was asking me if the book is about a lady werewolf. Lol. I said, no, it‘s not even about a wolf and I think the monster would be way bigger and it‘s a male I think, and it didn‘t even kill any ladies. So we both sat there and looked at the cover for a bit. 🤣 (edited) 4y

Rachel, the book arrived today! ☺️

Reggie, I love the postcard, and I‘m definitely going to read your book and send it back ASAP. And I‘m going to keep pushing you towards picking up an Austen someday. 🤣

vivastory @Reggie you should def check out Northanger Abbey. I didn't think I'd care for Austen & I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed it. 4y
marleed Oh Hatch Green Chiles reminds me of my 5 years in San Antonio and HEB‘s Central Market grocery store. They have one month a year where Hatch chili peppers are baked into everything - even apple strudel! I‘d never considered the uniqueness of a hatch chili pepper. I believe it has much to do with the New Mexico ground from which they are grown. It was such a fun a memorable education. 4y
sprainedbrain @marleed Chilies in apple strudel sounds oddly intriguing! 😆 4y

marleed @sprainedbrain It‘s really good - and freezable! It‘s the coolest thing - for that month, this huge grill-like thing spins hundreds of chili‘s. It‘s crazy, the foods to which they are included. Just one of the downtown SA things I miss so much. Maybe @Texreader can tell you more about it! 4y
Reggie Lol, I‘m glad you liked the card and I hope you like the book! 4y
Reggie @vivastory I have a Jane Austen mental block. But I‘m so tickled and happy to see all the pemberlitten posts. They almost make me want to read those books. Almost. 4y

Nope. Nope. Nope. Death of the dog, especially a horrific death is my dealbreaker. I‘m out.

BookDragonNotWorm I'm with you there. Completely unnecessary. Makes me lose respect for the author. I usually blacklist them. 4y

“Okay, boy. I believe you. Let‘s say we go have a look outside.”

Dude, NO! That‘s the last thing you should do. It‘s probably going to be the last thing you actually do!

#lmpbc @Reggie - If the dog dies, I will not forgive you. 🥺🥺

Reggie I‘m soooo sorry. But yeah, and the poor cows and the bull, too. BUT if it makes you feel better, after reading Tender is the Flesh last year I decided to stop eating meat and haven‘t eaten it or any animal products this whole month. #silverlining 4y
DGRachel @Reggie Thanks for the warning to avoid Tender is the Flesh! I hadn‘t reached details about the cows. I bailed at Bruno. 😭 4y

In 1996, Owl Goingback won a Bram Stoker for best first novel for this book. It‘s a creature feature that is anchored with some great history about Missouri and Native Americans extrapolated into natural disasters and some gnarly dream sequences. The writing is pretty decent for all the senses he managed to touch on not even including the fear of being stalked by a monster. There is a lot of testosterone in here. Women are purely ornamental. 👇🏼

Reggie Still a pick! 4y
vivastory I think this was picked as my state's book for that ny times horror by state list I posted a couple of weeks ago 4y
Reggie @vivastory That‘s cool. I had no idea ya‘ll had so many caves or that ya‘ll had a huge 7.2-8.2 earthquake back in 1812 that actually reversed the flow of the Mississippi for a couple of hours. All I think about when I hear Missouri is Branson and that‘s where Wayne Newton lived for a bit, lol. (edited) 4y

vivastory 😂😂 I lived in the area around Branson until I was 15 & I remember Wayne Newton opening his theater. Yeah there were a couple of caves that had guided tours that I remember going through a lot when I was younger. They've said that it's just a matter of time until we have another major earthquake. 4y
Cathythoughts Great post & comment conversation guys ( I‘m eavesdropping & smiling ) I love how much we learn from reading ❤️ 4y
Reggie @Cathythoughts ❤️Right? There was a lot of googlable tangents in here. 😊 4y

Straight up horror, which I appreciated... despite the fact that the female characters were just there for looks or screams. But thanks to a rather sexist monster, it went after the dudes first. I would definitely read more of Owl Goingback's books, especially in the future for Halloween reads! #Screamathlon2020 @StayCurious #TeamHarkness #Strangeathon for Not a Costume: Read a Book by an Indigenous Author. 16pts

🎧 Huh I liked this book. It‘s got lots of gore as the monster kills & eats people, animals, glow sticks ... a selfish bad guy that redeems himself & plenty of Indian lore. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great book! It kept me interested the entire book. Great use of Native American folklore to create a good book.
