WINNER OF THE MAURICIO ACHAR PRIZE FOR FICTION Liborio has to leave Mexico, a land that has taught him little more than a keen instinct for survival. He crosses the Rio Bravo, like so many others, to reach "the promised land." And in a barrio like any other, in some gringo city, this illegal immigrant tells his story. As Liborio narrates his memories we discover a childhood scarred by malnutrition and abandonment, an adolescence lived with a sense of having nothing to lose. In his new home, he finds a job at a bookstore. He falls in love with a woman so intensely that his fantasies of her verge on obsession. And, finally, he finds himself on a path that just might save him: he becomes a boxer. Liborio's story is constructed in a dazzling language that reflects the particular culture of border towns and expresses both resistance and fascination. This is a migrants' story of deracination, loneliness, fear, and finally, love told in a sparkling, innovative prose. It's Million Dollar Baby meets The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and a story of migration and hope that is as topical as it is timeless. From the Trade Paperback edition.

If I couldn't with deliberately mangled English in "Clockwork Orange," there was no way I was going to find it appealing here. But I wanted to read more novels about immigrants...and ok, fine, also to get an "X" for the #litsyatoz challenge. It was December and there was no time to find another one, ok?!

That said, I rolled my eyes at the overwrought prose, but it's a debut novel, and she tackles tough stuff. Want to read more from this author.

This is the story of a teenage boy who crosses from Mexico to America and the challenges he faces. I really wanted to like this book, but I was so put off by the over done writing. I got so dragged down in fragmented descriptions that is was really hard for me to keep reading! This book was written by a 19 year old woman and tells a very important story, so if it sounds interesting to you it might be worth picking up! It just wasn't for me!

merelybookish Good to know! I still have X to fill for #LitsyAtoZ. I've gotten three different books from the library by X authors and haven't read one. 7y

Happy #WomeninTranslation month! Tomorrow we release our first episode about #witmonth.
🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊🥊
To kick off the month, I'm reading THE GRINGO CHAMPION. It's lyrical and heart-rending and I can't put it down. Xilonen has written a magnificent underdog story about a boy who illegally comes to the US and then is recruited to be a stooge sparring partner for a prize fighter. But the first time he is put in the ring, he crushes the champion.

I'm starting this tonight! I ordered this to complete my #letterx for the #litsyatoz challenge. It is about a young boy who is forced to leave Mexico and immigrate to America, it looks fantastic! Also the author was only 19 when her book was first published! Talk about impressive! #booksintranslation #readingwomenmonth

merelybookish I borrowed this from the library. (Also for letter X) but then never read it. Will be interested to hear what you think. 8y
EllieDottie @merelybookish after you commented a memory came up in my mind and I actually think it was from your post that I was first introduced to this book!!! So thank you!!! I will definitely let you know what I think! 8y

From today's library haul. Picked up this book for #Litsyatoz when I noticed the author's last name started with X. Also, I like Europa editions.
But it's also an #immigrantsong. A first person narrative about Liborio who settles in the US as an illegal immigrant. Xilonen wrote it when she was 19. 😮

Have you ever finished a book and been sad that it's by a debut author because that means there's nothing else to read by them just yet? That's where I'm at.

Thanks to #LitsyPartyofOne I'm not bummed that happy hour plans fell through. Books and a terrible movie riffed by the former Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys constitute the ultimate nerd party.

....And while I am still very much bummed to not be on vacation, it was some consolation to return home and be greeted by the giant stack of books I had purchased at the Brattle Book Shop on a day's layover in Boston. That store was awesome.

Thank you @Liberty for giving me my "X" author for #litsyatoz! I've been struggling with this, especially because I'm trying to complete the challenge with female authors.
