The Trumpeter of Krakow
The Trumpeter of Krakow | Eric P. Kelly
9 posts | 8 read | 4 to read
For well over thirty years, Eric P. Kelly's Newbery Award winner has brought the color and romance of ancient times to young readers. Today, The Trumpeter of Krakow is an absorbing and dramatic as when it was first published in 1928. There was somthing about the Great Tarnov Crystal....Wise men spoke of it in hushed tones. Others were ready to kill for it. Now a murderous Tartar chief is bent on possessing it. But young Joseph Charnetski was bound by an ancient oath to protect the jewel at all costs. When Joseph and his family seek refuge in medieval Krakow, they are caught up in the plots and intrigues of alchemists, hypnotists, and a dark messenger of evil. Will Joseph be able to protect the crystal, and the city, from the plundering Tartars?

This is a lovely charming book, both a gripping historical adventure and a love letter to the city of Kraków. Some of the descriptions of the characters are a bit (ahem) 'of their time' but it's also really beautifully written and illustrated. Given that it was written in 1926, and what Poland has suffered since then, the final line - "May it bring in an epoch of peace to all men!" - is heartbreaking.

arlenefinnigan Highly recommend reading this if you're visiting Kraków - I read it on the flight here, and after reading this, it was quite the experience hearing the trumpeter for the first time. 1y

1/5⭐ The book is more a love letter to Poland/Krakow than something with a compelling plot or characters. Antagonists are portrayed with racist, xenophobic descriptions. #roll100

I wasn‘t sure what to expect with this but it was definitely a fun late Middle Ages adventure. It had a little bit of a fantasy vibe considering there was an alchemy subplot amidst an historical thriller type plot.

#BookReport
Welp this is looking a whole lot like last week but Bookly says I‘m about an hour away from finishing the tagged. Mainly this week I read a gigantic pile of cheesy harlequins but I don‘t track those.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal this week is to finish both of my current reads. The only problem is I start my new job on Tuesday.

sarahbellum Congrats on your new job! I hope your first day is great! 🤩 2y
HeyT @sarahbellum Thanks! It's my first library job since earning my degree. (edited) 2y
sarahbellum @HeyT Woohoo! Welcome to the librarian club! 🤓 2y
HeyT @sarahbellum Thanks again! I'm starting as part time so hopefully it won't be too overwhelming. 2y

Rolo got in the weirdest position while I was reading the tagged today. He‘s always up in my business but this was definitely a new one. #DogsOfLitsy

Traveling on to #Poland for #Augustisatrip! I remember reading and loving this book when I was a kid, but I also remember very little about the story. Except for a legend of a brave trumpeter who played valiantly during the defense of the city and was killed mid- song. I don‘t think that‘s even the main part of the plot, though. I need to go back and re-read this one of these days!

vkois88 I don't think I have ever heard of this one 🤔 6y
