so-soDid not love this book. The lives of a wealthy woman "giving
back" by teaching in a high school, a teen addicted to
video games, & a guy who makes a living as a chalk artist/
bartender/member of a theatre troop intersect in expected & unexpected ways. I thought the writing was just ok (surprising since the author had previously been nominated for the National Book Award) & the story of the unremarkable. Friends in my book club liked it though.
Chalk fest in my home town. So many talented people to meet!
so-soI have to say that the biggest thing that I liked was the depth that the author put into her characters. They all experience growth throughout the novel and she really develops this well. I feel like she could have cut down in some areas because it got to be a lot to keep track of by he end.
Why am I reading an ebook, when I have these! 😁 3 of my bookshelves, have 3 more in my bedroom and craft room❄📙📖🎶
bailedI can't get into this book and it has to go back to the library so I'm not going to force myself. Maybe I'll try it again sometime. Or, maybe not. 🙃
bailedI haven‘t bailed on many books but this is one I couldn‘t even finish! I‘m glad I won this in a giveaway because I would be sick if I paid money for it. I hate being so negative about a book but didn‘t like it at all.
so-soThat feeling you get when a favorite author produces subpar work. :( #sosad Goodman is usually great at criticizing systems we subscribe to--see INTUITION, KAATERSKILL FALLS. This is a shallow books vs video games screed. I wish she'd focused more on her teacher and a three dimensional high school experience. The video corp storyline was contrived and convenient. Startlingly one dimensional villain there, did nothing enlightening for the story

As a quick comparison, I liken the book to the film LOVE, ACTUALLY...in that it has interweaving stories with flawed and not always likable, yet relatable characters, in turns charming and bittersweet. But my full review goes into more detail. 🌸

pickGoodman writes smart characters and is on my auto-buy list after The Cookbook Collector, but I wasn't enraptured by the video game that brought the characters together. (I'm not a huge video game or fantasy fan.)
