When Argo, the White Goddess, orders it Geo, the itinerant poet, and his three disparate companions journey to the island of Aptor to seize a jewel from the dark god, Hama, and return it to Argo so that she may defeat the malign forces ranged against her and the land of Leptar. But, as the four push deep into the enigmatic heart of Aptor and the easy distinctions between good and evil start to blur, their mission no longer seems straightforward. For Argo already controls two of the precious stones and possession of the third would make her power absolute. And the four friends have learned that power tends to corrupt...

In a post apocalyptic world Geo, Urson, Iimmi, and Snake are tasked with the incarnate goddess Argo with rescuing her sister from the temple of Hama on the island of Aptor.

Fairly run of the mill. There wasn't anything actually bad about it, but it didn't really grab my interest either.

It was the old adage, convince a slave that he‘s free, and he will fight to maintain his slavery.

Afterwards, she was taken down to the sea. She didn‘t feel too well, so she sat on a rock down where the sand was wet and scrunched her bare toes in and out of the cool surface.

Pickpick

I enjoyed this tale of adventure of a poet, two sailors and a thief on a journey to find a missing magical stone to reunite with the others while rescuing a goddess at the same time. There are corpse eating ape creature, vampiric bird like creatures and radioactive zombie blobs. 4 stars.

It's a pulpy surrealist post-apocalyptic quest adventure, with mutant monsters, magic, and super-science (also a super-amoeba, which I dare you to say ain't cool). It's Delaney's first novel, which shows in its kitchen-sick plotting, derivative situations and uneven pacing. And yet: the language is already a cut above his contemporaries' and his interest in questions of perception and religion are already evident.

The parts where people were talking to each other and telling stories was alright, but the actual questing parts of this quest novel? I could take or leave those.

I am over half way through and I have no damn idea what's happening. The secretive merpeople who live in post nuclear America weren't really your friends?? All soldiers are bats??? Radiation kills the house sized mud/bone hybrid????

This being Delany's first published novel, it's not nearly as polished as his later material, and it's definitely not a book I would deem essential reading. However, it does show that even at the age of 19, his narrative voice was incredible. The plot, while a bit predictable, is solid, especially for a fairly straightforward quest novel. It's not one I'd recommend as your first Delany, but it's definitely worth the read if you're already a fan.

JamesChatham @chapter_fifty2017 The Amber Chronicles are actually by Roger Zelazny! Though, I've yet to read them so I'm not sure how they hold up. (edited) 7y
