Wounded
Wounded: A Novel | Percival Everett
4 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
Time Out Chicago, Top 10 Book of 2005 Winner of the 2006 PEN USA Literary Award for Fiction Training horses is dangerousa head-to-head confrontation with 1,000 pounds of muscle and little sense takes courage, but more important, patience and smarts. It is these same qualities that allow John and his uncle Gus to live in the beautiful high desert of Wyoming. A black horse trainer is a curiosity, at the very least, but a familiar curiosity in these parts. It is the brutal murder of a young gay man, however, that pushes this small community to the teetering edge of intolerance. Highly praised for his storytelling and ability to address the toughest issues of our time with humor, grace, and originality, Wounded by Percival Everett offers a brilliant novel that explores the alarming consequences of hatred in a divided America.

#WeeklyForecast 05/25

On this lazy Sunday I started The Family Experiment, John Marrs‘s most recent book. Next will be one from another author whose backlist I am making my way through. I came upon this cheap edition of this Percival Everett so had no choice but to buy it.
Bury Your Gays is another one from the #ToB25Longlist which is excellent this year.

TrishB Enjoy 😁 19h
squirrelbrain I hope you like Bury Your Gays! 🤞 Well, I hope you like all of them - you know what I mean! 🤪 19h

Another gem found in a neighborhood #LittleFreeLibrary ! I‘d never even heard of this one, but if Everett writes it I will read it. Grateful today to be outside in the currently fresh air in San Diego, even as I‘m feeling so much sadness for our northern neighbors, including some good friends who lost family homes. 💔

AmyG Devastating 😞 2w
Butterfinger I'm so sorry. It is all so sad. 2w
Hooked_on_books I completely agree about PE. I‘ll read anything he writes. 2w

ImperfectCJ I can relate to the simultaneous gratitude and sadness. Family back east keep asking if we're okay in San Diego, and when I say we are and that our college kid is safe at school so far, too, I feel it acutely, almost a guilt at feeling grateful to be safe (so far) when such destruction is happening only a couple of hours away. And of course knowing that our safety is contingent on something as capricious as wind patterns. 2w
BkClubCare I found this book last year and because it was PE I took it home. Thought it was great. Our hearts go out to all with threats of 🔥- very sad in so many ways. 2w
sarahbarnes I‘ve never heard of this one by him either - what a find! So terrifying what is happening. 💔 My daughter is just south of LA. 2w
monalyisha I always have trouble remembering where Littens are and keeping in mind the little details that make up their lives. It‘s part of why I love #AuldLangSpine. It brings a particular person into focus. I‘m sorry that I‘m learning *now* that you‘re in California, that I didn‘t reach out sooner, and that the details that make up your life are actually quite big right now. Sending love. 💗 Hoping against hope for increased climate justice. 2w
Christine @AmyG @Butterfinger So heartbreaking and beyond overwhelming for those affected. 2w
Christine @Hooked_on_books I feel lucky to have only read three of his so far! So much goodness to come. 2w
Christine @ImperfectCJ Well said. So concerned about what the next few days will bring. 2w
Christine @BkClubCare How fun that you found this one too and even better that you enjoyed! And yes, so much sadness and the enduring uncertainty is so hard. 2w
Christine @sarahbarnes Feels like an embarrassment of yet-to-be-discovered riches when it comes to Everett! And sending good wishes to your daughter, hope all are able to escape further disaster over the next few days. 2w
Christine @monalyisha It's so hard to keep track of where everyone is (region or country! :)! And I love that perspective re: #AuldLangSpine ! So true. We're so far unaffected in San Diego, though inland areas have warnings re: this next round of winds that's arriving. And yes, climate justice is so needed. We are all at risk wherever we live. 😔 2w

Pickpick

I can‘t figure it out; why isn‘t Percival Everett a household name? This is the 4th I‘ve read. THIS title won the PEN USA 2006 award. His next up is getting TON of buzz… anyway, this was brutal and amazing.

BkClubCare FYI @BookNAround - I had this posted to the wrong book 😔 1y
Megabooks He is awesome! 1y
BookNAround The only one of his that I‘ve read (although I own several) is So Much Blue as it was a 2017 Great Group Reads pick for the Women‘s National Book Association. It was definitely a good book. (edited) 1y

Next up! Did I choose a book by a favorite author that was few pages? Yes, yes I did. Did I choose a pie recipe based on what fruit was on sale at the grocery store? Yes, once again, YES. #CaresPieShow #iLovePie

Ruthiella Can‘t fault your reasoning! 👍 1y
