“The Vanderbeekers have always lived in the brownstone on 141st Street. It's practically another member of the family. So when their reclusive, curmudgeonly landlord decides not to renew their lease, the five siblings have eleven days to do whatever it takes to stay in their beloved home and convince the dreaded Beiderman just how wonderful they are.” Amazon

Delightful story of 5 children who, in devising a scheme, find out so much more…

This book was funky. It took like a storyline that seemed classic and then added one background storyline for two of the kids and nothing for the rest of them. I found Jessie annoying. Just because a 12 year old likes science doesn‘t mean she uses the word hypothesis in daily conversation. Everything about this book just felt unrealistic & not in a fun way. It might be because I‘m not the intended audience but I will not be reading the rest. 3⭐️?

CogsOfEncouragement Awe, too bad. I read this with my older kids a few years ago. We enjoyed it, giving it 4/5 stars. I liked it so much I recommend it to my mom who enjoyed it so much she did continue with the series. 2y

Enjoyable read aloud story of a large family about to be evicted from their Harlem brownstone in the week before Christmas which emphasises the importance of neighbourhood and community. Probably way above Beatrix‘s reading level (she is 5) but I figure it is ok when I am the one reading - I enjoy it more and Beatrix does seem to be able to follow the general plot.
Made me crave that sort of community connection.

Chrissyreadit It sounds like a perfect read aloud❤️ 4y

This is still my favorite Christmas chapter book for youth.

The Vanderbeekers love their Harlem brownstone, so it comes as a shock to the family of 7 when a little before Christmas they discover their landlord will not be renewing their lease. The kids set out on a mission to change the mind of their grumpy, reclusive landlord.

Even as a child I was never a big fan of kids books. I secured a Virtual Author Event with Karina Yan Glaser for my library however and read the first three Vanderbeekers books and loved them so much! These characters are precious and I love all of the adults as well as the kids. I also like how Karina doesn't shy away from showing scary and upsetting things like strokes or consequences like ruining a business.

This is a fun story. A loud boisterous family with 5 kids that try to figure out how to appease their landlord so they don‘t have to move. I really liked all the other non family members that are apart of the children‘s lives. It really does take a village. It‘s a light easy story to read, and I enjoyed every minute!

Day 10: Forming the Fellowship makes me consider how much I love making connections through books. I appreciate that the #YearofTolkien has helped me form a fellowship with other Tolkien readers on Litsy. I also love seeing a reference to my favorite books in other books. Today I‘m finishing up a middle grade book and this mention of LotR jumped out at me. Mentions like this build a fellowship between authors and readers.

#MiddleEarthMarch

JazzFeathers So true. I think books can unite us more than so many other things in our daily life. Stories go deep inside in places we think nothing will reach. And the connection we make in those places are special. The #YearOfTolkien group is special to me. Dare l say precious? 😉 6y

A ten year old recommended this book to me, so I got it out from the library. This is a sweet middle readers book, kind of a Little Women modern day family with twinges of a Hallmark Christmas special. It was definitely a feel-good book with themes of family, friends, neighborhoods and kindness and empathy.

First bail in a while. Sweet middle grade novel but it had too much of a “Hallmark Movie “ feel. Just feeling pressured because the countdown to getting as close to 150 books as possible, I want to read books that are worth my time. Definitely will try this book again next year when I‘m not on a time crunch !

Okay, unpopular opinion alert: I did not care very much for this book. There, it‘s out. Sorry. The characters were totally likeable, the setting was cute but the plot was just too simplistic and Hallmark movie like. It did have echoes of some of my favourite classics but that wasn‘t enough to win me over. Therefore: a cutesy quick read but nothing that will stick with me for very long. The cover is lovely though. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I‘ve read this before, but we just listened to the audiobook (read by Robin Miles) as a family and it was fantastic!

The five Vanderbeeker children have 11 days to convince their cranky shut-in landlord that he should renew their lease. Shenanigans ensue.

This story takes place around Christmas and has such a warm, comforting feel to it. It reminds me of The Penderwicks in some ways. Love it, love it.

As long as you are willing to suspend some disbelief, read like a kid (aka ignore what the adults should be doing), and enjoy some sap, this #middlegrade read will delight and uplift. The 5 Vanderbeeker siblings remind me of the Penderwicks and bring some Christmas cheer to their Harlem neighborhood and crotchety landlord. I‘m not 100% in love, but I did stay up long past my bedtime to finish it all in one night. #kidlit

Sorry for the poor lighting. I just finished this book by book light and I know I'm late to the party hype, but I LOVED it. I got it from the library today and finished it in one sitting (minus taking my dog to the vet and putting my little guy down for bed.) It was so good. I felt like I fit right into the world of the Vanderbeekers-it was written so warmly and invitingly. If you enjoy kidlit, READ THIS BOOK!

I‘m just reading middle grade books from now on. Pure saccharine goodness straight to the heart. The Vanderbeeker children are beautifully written and developed each distinct from the others. Supportive loving adults. These children take positive action when they believe they are going to lose the brownstone they love. I am in love with this family. Eagerly awaiting sequel and movie. Reese Witherspoon bought the rights already.
