The Devil and Webster
The Devil and Webster | Jean Hanff Korelitz
From the bestselling author of You Should Have Known and Admission, a twisty new novel about a college president and a student protest that mirrors today's campus unrest. Naomi Roth is the first female president of Webster College, a once conservative school now known for producing fired-up, progressive graduates. A former student radical herself, Naomi isn't alarmed when Webster students, including her own daughter, begin an outdoor encampment to protest a popular professor's denial of tenure, but when Omar Khayal, a charismatic Palestinian student with a devastating personal history, emerges as the group's leader, shocking acts of vandalism begin to destabilize the campus. As the crisis slips beyond her control, Naomi struggles to protect her friends, colleagues, and family from an unknowable adversary. A riveting novel about who we think we are, and what we think we believe.

I love her writing and thoroughly enjoyed The Plot. This is a very different book. I saw any “twists” coming v early on. It mostly left me frustrated and infuriated with Naomi President of Webster college. I was screaming at her to do something ! Not a v satisfying read for me. Interesting on the US college admissions procedure which is horrible. Here in Ireland it‘s based only on academic results and is free.I would recommend The Plot over this.

Starting this one now. I know very little about it except that it's dark academia and the author's books are frequently checked out of our library.

LibrarianToujours I used to work at the library on the cover! That‘s Baker Berry and Rauner at Dartmouth College 🤓 2y

Book 51

An engaging, but forgettable listen about a protest at a university. The novel touches on many current social issues. Perhaps narrowing the scope would have been more effective and meaningful. ⭐⭐⭐

Loving this so far...oy, the snark 🙌

TrishB I have this on the pile- you may have pushed it up a bit more. More university pettiness?? 5y
JennyM @TrishB I enjoyed it. It‘s a LOT of University pettiness but with a bit of a twist. I can see why some think it‘s a bit pretentious, but I think that was kind of the point, and it worked for me. (edited) 5y
TrishB I‘ll get to it eventually! 👍🏻 5y

Pickpick

Took a break from Genuine Fraud to finish this clever, satire on academia, race, privilege, belief and misplaced activism. Snarky & smart this book really appealed to me. I consider myself liberal and open minded but im sometimes left shaking my head in disbelief when I hear/ read about certain incidents occurring on college & university campuses. This book captured the absurdity for me. Curious to hear your thoughts @ElishaLovesBooks

#TuneintoNovember This book has gotten mixed reviews but I couldn't pass it up for $1 Has anyone read it??? Thoughts! Naomi Roth has gone from student activist to President of liberal Webster College when she finds herself caught in a political campus shit storm! #SoldMySoul

Next talk - Angelica Baker, Jean Hanff Korelitz, and Kaitlyn Greenidge talking about "identity politics and family frictions". Two of the authors are making their writing debut. Korelitz has a number of books written including Admission (which I love; she once again sets The Devil and Webster at a college). Our Little Racket has a blurb on it from the author of The Nest, and We Love You Charlie Freeman from the author of The Tiger's Wife. #mfob

This book was problematic but I do like a good academic story. It wasn't deep enough, it felt too shallow but I still devoured the pages, wanting to know what happened. I really liked You Should Have Known, and this one didn't quite do it for me.

I understand that, in normal times, we are defined by our differences, and differences are fine and beautiful things. But these are not normal times.

This is mid-so-so & pan.
I was completely intrigued by this book initially. The build up was there and I was in it then...... fizzle. It could have been great. It could have been good. It could have been ok. It turned into the typical, everything you don't like, white, rich, academia land.
Hell, I work at a university and I was really turned off by the end of this.

Set on a campus of a New England college: protesters, foreign-born students, first female president of the school. High on my good. 1st line: "What happened at Webster that year was harrowing, but it wasn't the first harrowing scenario Naomi Roth had faced, either as Webster's president or, indeed in her prior times at the college: professor, dean . . . & reluctant member of the search committee for the very job she'd end up occupying herself."

Combo #bookmail and #bookpurchase! I bought The Madwoman Upstairs while purchasing some pride wear for work/alma mater and funnily enough The Devil and Webster arrived from Grand Central Publishing - so I can read about Naomi Roth, first female president of Webster College while wearing my university swag.

I don't bowl anymore since my shoulder surgery a few years ago (and I was never good at it anyway, so I don't miss it). So I brought my book to hang out while the guys bowl. I feel like Diane Chambers. Cheers! (Get it? 😏)
