The Anodyne Necklace
The Anodyne Necklace | Martha Grimes
5 posts | 11 read | 3 to read
The third in the bestselling Richard Jury mystery series by Martha Grimes. A spinster whose passion was bird-watching, a dotty peer who pinched pennies, and a baffling murder made the tiny village of Littlebourne a most extraordinary place. And a severed finger made a ghastly clue in the killing that led local constables from a corpse to a boggy footpath to a beautiful ladys mansion. But Richard Jury refused, preferring to take the less traveled route to a slightly disreputable pub, the Anodyne Necklace. There, drinks all around loosened enough tongues to link a London mugging with the Littlebourne murder and a treasure map that would chart the way to yet another chilling crime.

I adore Jury and Plant. Laughs, great frienship, smart guys, intelligent kids, sneaky adults, and smitten women. I confess the mystery itself is secondary to me, because I love the Jury/Plant relationship so very much.

What's not to love.

I unabashedly love the Richard Jury series. This installment was sadder to me than the first two were, but that only made it a bit different, not less enjoyable. Aunt Agatha featured more in the first two books, and of course that results in wittily amusing exchanges. The friendship between Jury and Melrose Plant makes me smile; it gives both characters an opportunity to reveal themselves and be less alone. ⬇️

MittenGirlPeach When I started the first book I had no idea that Melrose would become Jury‘s Watson and appear in all the books, so it was a happy discovery. 3y
MittenGirlPeach The picture is our road last Sunday; lots of sunshine that day! Today we‘ve got clouds and more snow—on top of Friday‘s melting, followed by rain/sleet, then plummeting temps—our road is an icy sheet. Staying in! 📚 and 🥌 3y

Andrew65 Well done 👏👏👏 3y
TheAromaofBooks Things are finally melting here, but the 2+“ of sleet has turned into solid ice and is taking its sweet time to disappear!!! The roads are fine but everything else is still sooo slippery!!! 3y
MittenGirlPeach @TheAromaofBooks ughhhhhh! That sounds like what we have, but worse! The dirt roads are an icy mess here. I think we both have warmer temps in the forecast for next week, so that should help. (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks I definitely prefer snow to the sleety ice we got last weekend!! I have a contrary fondness for winter weather, probably because I stay home a lot 😂 3y

MittenGirlPeach @UwannaPublishme thank you! I love taking pics of our road. 3y

When in doubt, an attack of the book-doubts that is, I can always rely on Martha Grimes to make me smile.

Cathythoughts I love it 😁... Your becoming a fairy cake !!! That makes me smile too (edited) 7y
Centique @Cathythoughts she‘s good at lacing some gentle comedy into her mysteries! 7y
batsy Oh OK, this post answers my question 😁 Nice! I've never read Martha Grimes. 7y

Centique @batsy yes you sleuthed out the answer! Martha Grimes is a bit of a forgotten gem. I heard a book riot podcast about mysteries and someone mentioned her and now I‘m hooked. They‘re murder mysteries set in English villages with a sweetheart of a cop from Scotland Yard and his foppish friend the ex-Earl Melrose. 👍 7y
batsy You do know how to write an enticing blurb 😍 Sounds right up my street! 7y
CSeydel Oh, my mother was a huge Martha Grimes fan. She had all her books ... I read one or two of them when I was a young person 7y
Centique @CSeydel they‘re lovely - not too gruesome, not too sugary - they‘re just right (to quote Goldilocks!) 7y
CSeydel Quite! 👍🏼 7y

3rd Richard Jury novel is - like the previous - named after a pub. This time we also have a murdered lady, a young lady in a coma, some anonymous letters and a missing emerald necklace. Now-Superintendent Jury plods his way through the mysteries, assisted by the ever-suffering Wggins and the interested Melrose Plant. Just as enjoyable as the others!

This is the second Martha Grimes book I've read, and I'm really enjoying them. She writes cozy mysteries in the vein of an Agatha Christie or a Josephine Tey-- sharp police detective with his aristocratic sidekick solving murders.

LeahBergen Someone else looks pretty "cozy", too. ? 8y
