The Horses Mouth

The charming and larcenous Gulley Jimson has an insatiable genius for creation and a no less remarkable appetite for destruction. Is he a great artist? a has-been? or an exhausted, drunken neer-do-well? Originally published in 1944, The Horses Mouth is acclaimed Irish author Joyce Carys third instalment in his First Trilogy and sequel to Herself Surprised (1941) and To Be A Pilgrim (1942). It follows the adventures of Gulley Jimson, an artist who would exploit his friends and acquaintances to earn a quid. Similar to the first two books in the First Trilogy, events are told in the first-person narration and thus from the central characters point of view. Carys novel also uses Gulleys unique perspective to comment on the social and political events of the time, making Gulley Jimson one of the best-known characters in 20th-century fiction.

“Nothing like #poetry when you lie awake at night. It keeps the old brain limber. It washes away the mud and sand that keeps on blocking up the bends.
Like waves to make the pebbles dance on my old floors. And turn them into rubies and jacinths; or at any rate, good imitations.” - Gulley Jimson

“‘They can't give you all that, Mr Jimson,' said Walter, who was upset. 'It wouldn't be right. What would they give you seven years for?'

'Being Gulley Jimson,' I said, 'and getting away with it.‘”

Another quote from Gulley, ‘cause I love this book and this movie so much!

“Girl going past clinging to a young man's arm. Putting up her face like a duck to the moon. Drinking #joy. Green in her eyes. Spinal curvature. No chin, mouth like a frog. Young man like a pug. Gazing down at his sweetie with the face of a saint reading the works of God.” - Gulley Jimson (portrayed in the excellent film adaptation by Sir Alec “Obi-Wan” Guinness)

My #aQuoteaDay post honoring Gulley Jimson, an artist in search of a canvas, from a great book (and movie) about art and artists, The Horse's Mouth.

TobeyTheScavengerMonk That is indeed Obi Wan himself, Sir Alec Guinness, playing Gulley in the movie. This quote was on my mind due to the #poetic challenge of @jess.how 8y

I see that the Backlisted podcast people have done an episode on this one.

I also see that no one on Litsy seems to have read it. The Penguin edition shown here sat on my shelves unread for 15-20 years and I'm pretty sure I got rid of it finally when I liquidated my library to move to Japan. Should I read it yet?

Brenley How long is it? I say go for it! 8y
