Waiting for the Barbarians
Waiting for the Barbarians | J M Coetzee
A modern classic by Nobel Laureate J.M. Coetzee. J.M. Coetzee's latest novel, The Schooldays of Jesus, will soon be available from Viking. Waiting for the Barbarians centers on the crisis of the conscience of the Magistrate--a loyal servant of the Empire working in a tiny frontier town, doing his best to ignore an inevitable war with the "barbarians." After he witnesses the cruel and unjust treatment of prisoners of war, he reconsiders his role in the regime and carries out a quixotic act of rebellion. Mark Rylance (Wolf Hall, Bridge of Spies), Ciro Guerra, and producer Michael Fitzgerald are teaming up to to bring J.M. Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians to the big screen.

Mehso-so

Again another read which is somewhere between a pick and so-so. I liked the book and the underlying theme but the fetishisation of the native girl (it is a work addressing a colony in an unnamed location) was kinda weird. But it references the power and arrogance of the Empire and what happens to those who don‘t comply - even if it‘s their own people.

A difficult book, not to read or understand but to sit with its contents and hold the images in thought. Coetzee has us consider all the ways a human, and humanity, can experience torture. Are we part of an Empire for which torture is a tool? Are we ignoring that? What if the Empire moves its torture practices to the lot next door? At what cost do we continue to ignore? How does an individual become a torturer?

#bookspin for June

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I might have to read this one…his always make you think. I felt similarly about this one… 4y

A dark yet compelling book about oppressors and oppressed, Coetzee raises questions about justice and the human need to make some meaning of life. The scope of this short book is very wide and leaves the reader with questions to ask and answer, ideas to ponder over, plumbing the depths of human nature, loss and pain, resilience and what it means to be stripped down to the bare bones of existence.

An exceedingly poetic examination of the moral hypocrisy of imperialism, and the use of the “other” to define a cultural identity. I‘ll admit - some of the specific imagery and metaphors that were invoked were probably lost on me, but the broad themes were clear and stirring.

Shoring up the wonderful new holes in my 20th-Century #Classics Display! This one has really taken off and blown me away with how many books are getting borrowed off of it! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Have you read any of these?

ravenlee I wonder if people were inspired by the GAR to explore classics more. I‘ve gotten some of that vibe over the last few months. 6y

Pamwurtzler The Stepford Wives - delightfully creepy. 6y
Ruthiella Quite a few! That must be so satisfying when patrons check the books out from the display! 6y
Amiable Roots, Stepford Wives, In Cold Blood, It Can't Happen Here. All excellent reads. 👍🏼 6y
JenReadsAlot In cold blood is the best! 6y
Judie1 Beloved is my most treasured read. It horrified and shocked me but the realism mixed with the magical realism blew me away. I thought I knew stuff about slavery.....! True crime also a great genre and Capote‘s book amazing. Recommend Helen Garner‘s Joe Cinque‘s Consolation. (edited) 6y
staci.reads Beloved ripped my heart out! It's one of the books I measure other books against. I loved In Cold Blood, and I'm not much of a true-crime reader. I read It Can't Happen Here just 2 years ago: terrifyingly still relevant...it freaked me the freak out how many connections it has to today's world! 🤯 6y

Too often throughout history, one group of people will decide they‘re better than another group of people for some arbitrary reason. This book explores that irony, since the “civilized” group usually turns out to be the real barbarians. How relevant and timely this book remains. How can one man fight the Empire? I don‘t know, but it shouldn‘t stop us from trying.

Ddzmini Too true if you cut into all of us aren‘t we the same under it all so why then do some individuals think he or she is better when we are all the same from dust we are made and dust we will return 🤨😊 7y
AshleyHoss820 @Ddzmini Very true. If we could all understand that, this world would be a far better place. So those of us who know it, have to keep fighting the good fight. 7y

Coetzee has a writing style that is BEYOND. The best summation of how excellent this was is that for next quarter I'm trying to take a class solely on Coetzee 🍃
