Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys.: A Memoir | Viv Albertine

"Ms. Albertine's book is wiry and cogent and fearless.... Her book has an honest, lo-fi grace. If it were better written, it would be worse."Dwight Garner, The New York Times "Forget Katniss And Tris - Viv Albertine Is Your New Hero."MTV.com The Rough Trade #1 Book of the Year! Viv Albertine is a pioneer. As lead guitarist and songwriter for the seminal band The Slits, she influenced a future generation of artists including Kurt Cobain and Carrie Brownstein. She formed a band with Sid Vicious and was there the night he met Nancy Spungeon. She tempted Johnny Thunders...toured America with the Clash...dated Mick Jones...and inspired the classic Clash anthem "Train in Vain." But Albertine was no mere muse. In Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys., Albertine delivers a unique and unfiltered look at a traditionally male-dominated scene. Her story is so much more than a music memoir. Albertine's narrative is nothing less than a fierce correspondence from a life on the fringes of culture. The author recalls rebelling from conformity and patriarchal society ever since her days as an adolescent girl in the same London suburb of Muswell Hill where the Kinks formed. With brash honestyand an unforgiving memoryAlbertine writes of immersing herself into punk culture among the likes of the Sex Pistols and the Buzzcocks. Of her devastation when the Slits broke up and her reinvention as a director and screenwriter. Or abortion, marriage, motherhood, and surviving cancer. Navigating infidelity and negotiating divorce. And launching her recent comeback as a solo artist with her debut album, The Vermilion Border. Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys. is a raw chronicle of music, fashion, love, sex, feminism, and more that connects the early days of punk to the Riot Grrl movement and beyond. But even more profoundly, Viv Albertine's remarkable memoir is the story of an empowered woman staying true to herself and making it on her own in the modern world.

Finally finished this after months of only reading it at bedtime. I was falling asleep because I was tired, not bored! If you‘re a fan of music and pop culture, The Slits, women making their way in a male-dominated field, or London in the 60‘s and ‘70s, you will enjoy this book. The writing is light and fun, and the storytelling is solid. I also watched the documentary on The Slits, which is available on Hulu and Amazon Prime.

This book was such a treasure. I was initially scared to read it because, without fail, memoirs I'd read by admired musicians had shown so much thoroughly unrepentant awfulness--past and present--in the author that they'd permanently soured me on the author's music. But on top of her book and her music, I now know that Viv Albertine herself is a treasure. I hope her life brings her nothing else but joy.

The male-authored reviews of Albertine's book are as dismissive and backhanded as the male-authored reviews of her band's music were. It pisses me off. For my money, musicians writing in a simple style is great, and if they don't like it, they can just jack off to The Death of Bunny Munro again.

Weaponxgirl yes they can! 😂 5y
Bertha_Mason Just to be clear, I also love Nick Cave, but his writing style is not the only worthy one. 5y

Weaponxgirl I get it, sometimes it feels like you have to shout about how good other sounds are alongside the approved man who has taste sounds. Been there done that 😆 5y

TheKidUpstairs @ReadOrDieRachel I don't think they meant to be rude. I think it was an extremely misguided attempt to pump up the crowd. They kept talking about how they'd "heard Toronto crowds were boring and stagnant and didn't know how to party" and that we were proving the talk right because we clearly didn't understand that this was party music. But it had the opposite effect. People around us danced less and less. Unfortunate and misguided. Still ❤ the ?! 7y

If you like music memoirs, this is an excellent one about Viv Albertine, who achieved #fame as the guitarist for the female punk band The Slits. Well written and full of the juicy tidbits you want from a memoir like this (crossing paths with Sid Vicious and Vivienne Westwood) but also full of a lot of honesty and heart. And a really unexpected and weird appearance by director Vincent Gallo.

If I had my time over, I'd be a rock star. Well, I'd TRY to be a rock star. The fact that I haven't really got the 'Rock Star Voice' wouldn't have held me back, I'm sure (yeah, right!!). This is such an honest autobiography. She tells it all, warts and all. And she really lived (and is still doing it!). Loved it!!

TrishB Great book 😀 8y

The author was a member of the Punk band, the Slits and very much lived the late 70's punk lifestyle. I found this book mesmerizing and the punk scene so fascinating and frankly a bit intimidating. The second half of the book is more relatable to my life as it details her life post-punk. Marriage, infertility, motherhood and trying to go back to herself amongst all that. Really recommend if you like reading about the music scene.

Cinfhen Sounds fascinating, thanks for posting 💗 8y
HardcoverHearts She is a personal idol of mine, having been a girl in punk a generation later. She was groundbreaking without being super tough. She was reserved/a little shy. And her love of real fashion was endearing & novel in that scene. I found the second half so real and raw and honest. It's not as glamorous to be a stay at home Mom as is was to be a revolutionary rocker. Her struggles felt very real. I admired her for baring herself like that. 8y
Lissa00 @HardcoverHearts Thank you for your perspective on this book! It was such a nice surprise to read her incredible story. I'm not very familiar with punk but as a teenager during the grunge years, I see some similarities. I visited iTunes a lot while reading this to hear snippets of songs:) 8y

Mehso-so

Book of 2 halves. Great history of the Sluts & punk era in general. Some amazing anecdotes re: Sid Vicious, Mick Jones. Fab photos. A lot of name dropping - it WAS an incestuous scene but it got a bit cheesy/tiresome/braggy. 2nd half - tedious & self pitying (cancer/IVF section the exception). In general very readable but the retrospective feminism was doubtful & not really sure I liked Viv. She was inspiring as a musician but ...

readingjedi She seemed self obsessed, selfish & shallow. Her letting the 14 year old Ari Up go in a car with 2 strange men she didn't trust didn't sit well with me. Lost a lot of respect for her. And what's with the constant need of male approval?! 8y

Loved the descriptions of her early years, racketing around London and getting into scrapes. The book takes quite a turn with her married life, but I loved reading about her time with the Slits. Listen to their album Cut, or better yet get your hands on their Peel Sessions.

Kosugi Along with Carrie Brownstein's this is one of my favourite recent music bios. 8y

I read this two years ago (maybe more) & it still sticks with me. After a weekend of thinking about what I believe in & how I show that, I find myself thinking of Viv - a woman who knows exactly what she believes in and fights for it, not matter what it costs her. I wish I could be more like her.

A full portrait of a woman‘s life, not afraid to show the vulnerability and strength that it takes to make it through the highs and lows. Recommended to music lovers, and for those looking for an honest and intriguing memoir.
