For a first novel, you can see Simmons‘ skill in weaving the terrifying into reality. Simply put, this book is about finding a poet long thought dead. It turns into a tale of fighting the darkness with light, refusing the unknown for the known, and battling evil by walking away.
It was gory, and disturbing, but it didn‘t keep me up at night.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It‘s a tiny Simmons; I don‘t know what it‘s about; I‘ve heard it‘s terrifying/disgusting... let‘s see how this goes. 😳
Meh. The book was at turns slow, dull, and gross, but mostly just sad. It‘s also extremely problematic in its representation of Calcutta and India in general. This is very much a story of “exotic” locales, people, and religions told from a white perspective. Worst of all, for a supposedly terrifying novel, I didn‘t find it scary at all. Always good to get an old book off my TBR, though.
#screamathon book two
😳😳😳 I don‘t know how I feel... I like it, do I? Does anyone? Can you? It‘s batshit crazy. I like it.
Did a book haul today!! Some are for me and some are for others! Christmas shopping is almost done! #bookhaul
We lost our sweet cat Kali yesterday. She was almost 17 and in poor health, so it wasn‘t unexpected, but it was still hard. Our kids our taking it especially hard because she was the only pet they‘d ever known. We‘ll miss you, Kali ♥️
Fantasy thriller about a journalist who travels to Calcutta to meet people who claim to be in contact with a deceased poet M Das. Amazing description of the contradiction of beauty and sleaze that make up Calcutta. Good build up but takes time to get going, only by the last third it starts moving. There is no clear conclusion to the events. 7.5/10
My #readingcompanion, Kali. I've had her for 15 and 1/2 years. She turned 16 last week and other than a thyroid condition that we treat with twice-daily pills, she is in great condition.
