Root to Leaf
Root to Leaf: A Southern Chef Cooks Through the Seasons | Steven Satterfield
3 posts | 2 read
Finalist for the 2016 IACP Awards: Julia Child First Book Eat More Vegetables. Chef of the award-winning Atlanta restaurant Miller Union, Steven Satterfielddubbed the Vegetable Shaman by theNew York Times Sam Siftonhas enchanted diners with his vegetable dishes, capturing the essence of fresh produce through a simple, elegant cooking style. Like his contemporaries April Bloomfield and Fergus Henderson, who use the whole animal from nose to tail in their dishes, Satterfield believes in making the most out of the edible parts of the plant, from root to leaf. Satterfield embodies an authentic approach to farmstead-inspired cooking, incorporating seasonal fresh produce into everyday cuisine. His trademark is simple food and in his creative hands he continually updates the regions legendary disheseasy yet sublime fare that can be made in the home kitchen. Root to Leaf is not a vegetarian cookbook, its a cookbook that celebrates the world of fresh produce. Everyone, from the omnivore to the vegan, will find something here. Organized by seasons, and with a decidedly Southern flair, Satterfield's collection mouthwatering recipes make the most of available produce from local markets, foraging, and the home garden. A must-have for the home cook, this beautifully designed cookbook, with its stunning color photographs, elevates the bounty of the fruit and vegetable kingdom as never before.

Even though this cookbook is gorgeous, I have seen many of these dishes elsewhere - I thought originality was low. Added to the giveaway shelf in my laundry room.

What an amazing farm-to-table dinner with fresh, local winter-spring fare we had this evening! The local Pinpoint Restaurant hosted a menu from the Atlanta chef who wrote the tagged book. The book is gorgeously photographed & informative and the food prepared from the recipes was SPECTACULAR. There was also a nearby wine importer who provided pairings, so I might be a teensy bit tipsy at this point... 😁🍷#eatlocal

saresmoore And if you‘re thinking, “Is that Sue Perkins of Great British Baking Show fame behind your husband?!” The answer is, no; I checked. 7y
Reviewsbylola Sounds like a phenomenal night. 7y
saresmoore @Reviewsbylola I was blown away! It‘s the best date night we‘ve had, by far. Cool to meet the chef who prepared the food and the cookbook author, as well! 7y

AmyG Sounds amazing. 7y
emilyhaldi Love it!! 🥂 7y
saresmoore @emilyhaldi It‘s always a good night when I come home with a new book and two bottles of French wine. 😊 7y
saresmoore @AmyG The food was really superb and it was the produce that shone the brightest. I‘ve never tasted such a delicious radish—with English pea hummus, no less! 7y
AmyG Sounds like a perfect foodie evening. And you got a signed book! (edited) 7y
BarbaraBB Sounds perfect, all of it! 💜 7y
LeahBergen That sounds like a perfect evening! 😍😍 7y
Suet624 You got a date night!!!! So awesome. 7y
Moray_Reads That sounds wonderful 😋😋 7y
saresmoore @LeahBergen It really was! We were the youngest people there, but I‘m pretty used to being in a generational minority at events. 7y
saresmoore @Suet624 It was the perfect kind, too—the intersection of our interests (him: eating good food; me: cooking and reading). The cookbook has tons of recipes I‘ll be able to replicate with ingredients from local farms! 7y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads The dish that most surprised me with its deliciousness was a baked egg in celery cream. Of course, I also had an amuse-bouche of lamb tartare, which was adventurous for me! 7y
saresmoore @BarbaraBB This was my first time attending an event of this type, but it won‘t be my last! The chefs & wine importer gave excellent presentations and I ate incredible food sourced from nearby farms that was presented like fine dining—but then I also went home with the recipes! It was all accessible and engaging, but not lacking in polish. 7y
BarbaraBB Well it sounds really great, the combination of all these things! 7y
batsy How wonderful! Sounds like you had a blast 🍷🍽️ Not even Raskolnikov can deny the pleasure of a good meal! 7y
batsy Now all I can think about is baked egg in celery cream... 7y
saresmoore @batsy I won‘t deny that I had some Raskolnikov-esque moments of mental torment. Panic attacks make enjoyment of anything pretty difficult, but I managed to push past it. 😆 7y
saresmoore @batsy It was so delicious. I can‘t even describe it. 7y
batsy I can empathise with that. Well done on being able to push past it, no easy thing. When you and I go for dinner one day we'll totally help each other out 😘 And we'll definitely order the baked egg in celery cream. 7y
saresmoore @batsy Yes, please! Oh and hey, don‘t order that Virago limited edition Rebecca—unless you‘ve already done it? #spoileralert 7y
batsy I haven't! Oh my gosh, you made my heart stop. You shouldn't! Please only order it for yourself ❤️ 7y
saresmoore I did it before I saw your comment! Oops! It immediately made me think of you. ♥️♥️♥️ 7y
batsy Oh my god, Sara. That's too much. You are the absolute best! ❤️❤️❤️ I can't thank you enough... But I will find a way to do so 😘😘 (i.e. Emailing you shortly because I can't believe I forgot to ask for your new mailing address) 7y
LauraBeth What a great picture 💕 Whenever y‘all are in Atlanta we will treat y‘all to dinner at Miller Union. 7y
saresmoore @LauraBeth That would be a dream come true! ♥️ Steven Satterfield seems kind & down-to-earth—and his recipes are amazing. 7y

Not watching the game, but figured I could still enjoy a game day inspired meal. This is Gumbo Z'Herbes from Satterfield's cookbook & it's delish! Reading this round's #24hourreadingroom selection, but no spoilers as to what that is! 😉

MrBook I like what I see here 😎👍🏻! 8y
