Wigs on the Green
Wigs on the Green | Nancy Mitford
12 posts | 13 read | 4 to read
Nancy Mitfords most controversial novel, unavailable for decades, is a hilarious satirical send-up of the political enthusiasms of her notorious sisters, Unity and Diana. Written in 1934, early in Hitlers rise, Wigs on the Green lightheartedly skewers the devoted followers of British fascism. The sheltered and unworldy Eugenia Malmain is one of the richest girls in England and an ardent supporter of General Jack and his Union Jackshirts. World-weary Noel Foster and his scheming friend Jasper Aspect are in search of wealthy heiresses to marry; Lady Marjorie, disguised as a commoner, is on the run from the Duke she has just jilted at the altar; and her friend Poppy is considering whether to divorce her rich husband. When these characters converge with the colorful locals at a grandly misconceived costume pageant that turns into a brawl between Pacifists and Jackshirts, madcap farce ensues. Long suppressed by the author out of sensitivity to family feelings, Wigs on the Green can now be enjoyed by fans of Mitfords superbly comic novels.

Bailedbailed

I think Nancy Mitford‘s life and family are fascinating, and I wanted to read this book because it upset her family when it was published, especially the Nazi sympathizer members. She refused to let it be reprinted in her lifetime, partly because of the mediocre sales numbers and reviews, but mainly because she wanted to keep the peace within her family. I bailed. She‘s a good writer but the story and characters just didn‘t keep me interested.

Mehso-so

This book was a very interesting glimpse into 1935 Britain. The subject matter is much more serious than Nancy anticipated, I believe, based on the flippant way she treats Naziism and Social Unionism. I see parallels in the way America treated certain people, events and policies pre-2016…

This was hilarious, a complete “send up” of Oswald Mosley and his black shirt followers, of idle aristocrats, and pretentious Mrs. Lacey. I loved every single second once I made it past page 30. There is nothing in this book that is politically correct, but then again it was published in 1935. I loved it and will reread it with relish! 4.5/5

LeahBergen I really need to get to this one soon. I‘m kind of doling out my Mitfords very carefully to make them last. 😆 4y
CindiB I hear you @LeahBergen . I have subscribed to A Mitford Year subscription at UK Heywood Hill bookshop. 5 of Nancy‘s novels and then 7 current women writers they admire. I also have a bio on Nancy to read and then one of the 6 sisters. So far 3 books of Nancy‘s have arrived. The Pursuit of Love my fav, then Wigs on the Green, and then Love in a Cold Climate. 4y

Well I am a fan of PG Wodehouse and this, my first Nancy Mitford book was a delighful Wodehousian romp! What a cast of characters and farce- I am told this is not one of her top 3 books but I enjoyed every minute! Heiresses and suitors and batty peers building nests in trees and the Union Jackshirts- clearly a farce with Oswald Mosely and Unity Mitford very losely fictionalized! This was my TBR”classics” read for this month and 4⭐️

LeahBergen I‘m looking forward to this one! 4y
Booksnchill @LeahBergen I was laughing out loud- but I find british farce very funny! Hope you enjoy it! 4y

After the most recent book fair I attended, I realized I now own four books by Nancy Mitford, but I‘ve yet to read any of them. Any suggestions on which of these to start with?

mabell Great cover collection! 5y
Centique I think Pursuit of Love is her most famous. It didn‘t quite work for me but lots of other Littens LOVE this book 😊 5y

Since I can't describe this book any better than the blurb, I give you the blurb.

This novel is written in 1935, and I can't help wondering if she would have made fun of her sister's husband in a different way if it had been written later? In some scenes it's very pro Hitler and it feels weird reading those knowing what happened.

I will definitely read other novels by her.

Aimeesue Not her best, but Mitford is so witty! The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate are favorites of mine. 6y
AnneCecilie @Aimeesue I know, that is what I really liked. Thanks for the tips for what to read next of hers, I was wondering a little about that. Have to read all of her books? 6y

The reference to Jolly Roger reminds me of something completely different. Isn‘t that the name Johnny Depp‘s boat in Pirates of the Caribbean?

Tkgbjenn1 The Black Pearl was the name of Captain Jack Sparrow‘s Ship in The Pirates of the Caribbean. A Jolly Roger is a generic English term for a Pirates flag. 7y

I love Mitford's witty, satirical writing. On the other hand, she included a lot of political and socioeconomic subtext that I could only take so much of... This book has me itching to learn more about her sisters, 2 of which the characters in this book are (quite controversially) based on!

In other news, I hit a wall this afternoon (as did Chunk, pictured 🐱) and could read no further, but still managed to finish 3 books #4in48readathon 😅

Dragon I suggest this book on the Mitford sisters 7y
Leftcoastzen I love Jessica . Even though this book is very old, 1963 then revised,it was very bold to peel back the complexity of the US funeral industry. (edited) 7y
Sophoclessweetheart Oh! I love Nancy Mitford and this book is one of my favourites. Her sister Deborah Mitford lives at Chatsworth House bear my home (she‘s the mother of the Duke of Devonshire that lives there too) and Chatsworth boasts a museum with lots of information on Nancy and her books and life because of her.💛💛💛 (edited) 7y

EvieBee @RidgewayGirl I seriously need to read it already. I attempted a few times and I knew I wasn‘t in the right frame of mind to really appreciate it. I just know it‘ll be a favorite. Maybe after this reading slump passes I can finally get back to the slower paced classics I so enjoy! I‘ll keep you posted. ❤️ 7y
