Speaking Pittsburghese
Speaking Pittsburghese: The Story of a Dialect | Barbara Johnstone
8 posts
This book explores the history of Pittsburghese, the language of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area as it is imagined and used by Pittsburghers. Pittburghese is linked to local identity so strongly that it is alluded to almost every time people talk about what Pittsburgh is like, or what it means to be a Pittsburgher. But what happened during the second half of the 20th century to reshape a largely unnoticed way of speaking into this highly visible urban "dialect"? In this book, sociolinguist Barbara Johnstone focuses on this question. Treating Pittsburghese as a cultural product of talk, writing, and other forms of social practice, Johnstone shows how non-standard pronunciations, words, and bits of grammar used in the Pittsburgh area were taken up into a repertoire of words and phrases and a vocal style that has become one of the most resonant symbols of local identity in the United States today.

Haven't had a chance to do much reading lately since we've been visiting family and enjoying a Pittsburgh homecoming. After a pierogi lunch we visited my spiritual home, Randyland, then on to Bicycle Heaven, the world's largest bike museum, to pay homage to Pee-Wee's beloved Schwinn. We unwound with a few (dozen) games at Pinball Perfection, took advantage of free admission at the Warhol Museum, and capped it off with a rare Pirates victory!

Bookwormjillk Pittsburgh is such an underrated city 1y
Sara_Planz I‘m from there and it really is such a wonderful place! 1y
The_Penniless_Author @Bookwormjillk @Sara_Planz I swear that Pittsburgh has been top of those "most liveable" and "trendiest" city lists for at least 25 years now. I'm glad it never quite blew up the way Seattle or Austin did. It's changed some since I last lived there, but not in any fundamental way. Still a really affordable place where creative people can pursue their passions. A great city for weirdos, in the best possible way ? 1y
RaeLovesToRead "Randyland"? ? 1y
The_Penniless_Author @RaeLovesToRead Google it. It's cool as hell. 1y

Calling all #Pittsburgh littens! This is not a drill🚨🚨🚨 Sewickley library is having their big book sale this weekend. I'm heading there right now! $5 a bag! #hopeforgoodfinds #soexcited #canyoutell

paulfrankspencer How big can a bag be? Is this going on all weekend? 6y
kricheal @paulfrankspencer update on that: Sunday they are $5 a bag. I must have read something wrong on their fb or just got too excited. 😂😂😂 Anyways right now it's $1 paperbacks and $2 hardbacks...but I called before I went and you can bring your own bag. 6y

paulfrankspencer Thanks. I drive across the bridge after work and might stop by. Thanks for the heads up. 6y
kricheal @paulfrankspencer small world. Good luck with that traffic. I live right over in Ambridge in Old Economy pretty much. 6y
paulfrankspencer I'm up the river in Avalon. Not far at all. 6y
kricheal @paulfrankspencer basically rt 65 Ohio River neighbors. I can see both from my bedroom window. I recently discovered not in Avalon but near there off of Camp Horne, the Good Loven Bakery. Omg. You been there? 6y
paulfrankspencer I have not. But you make a strong case for it. Anchor and Anvil in Ben Avon is my haunt. Just ok coffee, but good neighborly vibes. 6y
kricheal @paulfrankspencer I'll have to look into that. My favorite local coffee place is called Old Crow Coffeehouse. If you're ever down this way check them out. 6y
paulfrankspencer Is 20 too many? 6y
emtobiasz I work all day Saturday, but I may have to check out this $5 bag day Sunday... #noselfcontrol 6y
kricheal @paulfrankspencer 20? Are you sure that's enough?😂😂 I'm thinking about going back Sunday when they are $5 a bag. I bought 11, but I could have have easily bought so much more. 6y

Saw this while browsing the Littsburgh website and it made me chuckle. "Yinz" is a word I've only encountered in Western PA. #Pittsburghese

SilversReviews And I believe you are correct. I don‘t say it though. 7y
diovival @SilversReviews Me either. I'm not native Pennsylvanian and say Y'ALL. Other interesting words I've heard while living in Pittsburgh: nebby, neffs, Ike, redd up 7y
SilversReviews @diovival LOL...I do say nebby and redd up. 7y

diovival Oops.... misspelled nephs 7y
emtobiasz @diovival @SilversReviews I doubt I'll ever be able to use "yinz" naturally (PGH resident of 1.5 yrs) but nebby is a useful word! 7y
SilversReviews @emtobiasz I would NEVER say YINZ, and I have lived here my entire life. @diovival 7y

Bus to Pittsburgh got in at 6:15 and my friend isn‘t picking me up til 9, so getting some writing and tea time in.

Kaylamburson What a cool machine! Can you then upload what you write to a computer? I imagine it'd be hard to edit on there. 7y
RiaWritten @Kaylamburson Yes you can! All it takes is a usb cable. It emulates a keyboard. Then you press “send” and it types it into your computer. I love this thing. Twelve bucks on eBay. Distraction free. AlphaSmart 3000. :) 7y
Kaylamburson That's so nifty! And not expensive at all! Is it lightweight? That just seems so perfect for any traveling writing that doesn't want to take s full computer. How much can you save on there before you need to upload? 7y

RiaWritten @Kaylamburson it is fairly lightweight. Lighter than a laptop anyway. It holds about 100 pages, split evenly across 8 files. It also runs forever on 3 AA batteries. 7y
Kaylamburson I love this!! Thanks so much for the info! @SewItGoes 7y
diovival Welcome to Pittsburgh! 👋 7y
night_shift I SO desperately want an Alphasmart! I think it will help keep me distraction free (or at least pretend like it haha) 7y
