Rotherweird | Andrew Caldecott
Welcome to Rotherweird: a town with no guidebooks and no history, but many, many secrets . . . 'Baroque, Byzantine and beautiful - not to mention bold' Mike Carey, author of THE GIRL WITH ALL THE GIFTS A stunning combination of Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and Gormenghast with a dash of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. The town of Rotherweird stands alone - there are no guidebooks and no visitor's centre, despite the tangled architecture, avant garde science and offbeat rituals. Cast adrift from the rest of England by Elizabeth I, its independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody, but nobody, studies Rotherweird or its history. For beneath the enchanting surface lurks a patch of slippery sky and a secret so dark that it must never be rediscovered, still less reused. But secrets have a way of leaking out. Two inquisitive outsiders arrive: Jonah Oblong, to teach modern history at Rotherweird School (nothing local and nothing else before 1800), and the sinister billionaire Sir Veronal Slickstone, to renovate the town's long-derelict Manor House. Though driven by conflicting motives, Slickstone and Oblong strive to connect past and present, until they and their allies are drawn into a race against time, and each other . . . with lethal and apocalyptic consequences. In Rotherweird, nothing is quite what it seems. Rotherweird is the first book in the forthcoming Rotherweird Trilogy by Andrew Caldecott.

#TBRPile 📚 1558: Twelve children, gifted far beyond their years, are banished to the town of Rotherweird. Four and a half centuries on, cast adrift from the rest of England and still bound by its ancient laws, Rotherweird's independence is subject to one disturbing condition: nobody studies the town or its history. Then an Outsider arrives, a man of untold wealth and power, enough to buy the whole of Rotherweird - deeply buried secrets and all...

This was a calming book for me. Like there's plot and conflict and decent pacing but I found it relaxing for some reason. It's a mash-up of a few different genres but I think anyone just wanting to enjoy a historical fiction that just ISN'T THAT DEEP. The characters were enjoyable and I did keep guessing about the whole mystery for the entire book. I'll definitely be picking up the sequel.

We also need to normalize using maps as book covers.

eshchory I loved this one and the sequel. Now I just have to read the last one in the trilogy. 4y
SassenachTheBookWizard @eshchory I am definitely going to pick up book 2! 4y

I don‘t know why I haven‘t heard more about this book. It defies genre, it mixes history and present, it has a touch of magic/science, and it was a fantastically fun adventure/mystery! The sequel comes out next week and I‘m quite excited to see what comes next (even though this book very satisfactorily wraps up — almost unique in a series book).

8/12 📚 Undecided how I feel about this book really. By the end I was hooked and am intrigued to know what happens next. But it took soooo long to get to the interesting final section. Was it due to over kill setting up the plot for an audience who can‘t grasp complex plot lines? Because only one of the reveals/twists was unexpected, the rest were spoon fed. Hmmm, will I read the second book? Probably only if I get it second hand cheaply. ⭐️ 6/10

Pick, with reservations. Weird, in both the old & new sense of the word, this book is too long & drags in the middle. It is also overly pleased with itself, which is a bit off-putting tbh. However, it is v-e-r-y British (a good thing IMO) - by turns clever, intricate, whimsical & sinister. It is an enticing world to visit with eccentric characters & intriguing lore. Not sure I'll pick up the sequel, but I'm satisfied it was time well spent.

I 100% decided to check out this book based on its cover! But so far I‘m really enjoying it and it is as quirky as I hoped it would be. #coverlove

GrilledCheeseSamurai Whenever I see this in the bookstore I'm intrigued and reach for it. I've yet to pull the trigger on buying it but I'm pretty sure it'll happen. 👍 5y

Set in rural England, Rotherweird has to no police, no bishop, no MP, so basically no interference from the rest of the country. It is historical fantasy with lots of great characters and a strange world with strange creatures. #bookseries

I loved this book, it was such a pleasure to read. The creation of this world was so thorough and affectionate I‘m a bit sad to leave it. I wish some of the characters were explored a bit more, but it is a series, so I‘ll just have to wait for the second book. Patience is not one of my virtues!

You know when you start one of those randomly selected books and are surprised by its brilliance? I could not stop reading. The premise was intriguing - a town that is forbidden by regulation to learn any history before 1800 - and a cast of fascinating characters. There was a lot going on but for me it struck a good balance between enough clues to work some things out without giving away everything.

MiyakoBunny Absolutely 😃 sometimes I just go to the library 📚 & Say Hey 👋🏼 There Book I would buy you a drink 🥃 first but this isn‘t one of those nights 😉 Then every once in awhile you get pleasantly surprised by said book 📚 & you put a ring on it 💍 7y

I asked to review this book based om the charming cover art.
Great decision!!
A whimsical fantasy, with oddball world building and a cast of eccentric characters.
I would recommend it to fans of Jonathan Strange &Mr Norrell with natural science and steampunk instead of magic.

How this did drag! By the end of the first 1/3 my interest had waned. Caldecott aims for a Gormenghast-esque tone but his attempt to replicate the juicy gothic atmosphere of Peake just doesn't work. He imitates the outlandish names but while Peake's cartoonish characters are compelling and complex Caldecott's are flimsy and interchangable. Also having the explanation revealed step-by-step at the end is only acceptable for Christie and Sayers!

Jokila Oh god I hate that 🤦🏻‍♀️ the over-explanatory ending can ruin a good story 8y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk I gotta make Peake happen at some point in my life. 7y

@DeborahSmall I caved and preordered two more books from Goldsboro! I want so many more though! Xx

DeborahSmall I really want Rotherweird and a few more but I've overspent this month already, at the end of the month I'll definitely be ordering. Last I looked my Goldsboro list was at 7! Xxx 8y
ScorpioBookDreams @DeborahSmall I've started saving some money each month just for my Goldsboro purchases! Xx 8y
DeborahSmall Me too x this week and next week are phone bill weeks. I pay my sons bill every month (ed....that's 2 or 3 Goldsboro books every month. Times like this I feel like cancelling it! My list is down to 6 for Goldsboro, few of them May releases so I'm hoping I'll have time to get them xx 8y

ScorpioBookDreams @DeborahSmall there seem to be so many good books out in May. They should offer instalment plans but maybe that would encourage us too much!! Xx 8y
DeborahSmall I'm hoping that the May releases are still available in June as family are getting told book vouchers or cash 😉. Im sure it's simple enough to send a gift voucher if I tell family what website to visit x 8y
ScorpioBookDreams @DeborahSmall I can never seem to tell which books will sell out and which won't. Fingers crossed they all stay available! Xx 8y
