Guns | Stephen King
11 posts | 22 read | 19 to read
In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are Kings keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done.

Reading Guns made me furious. Furious because I live in a country where it's so easy for things like this to happen, furious because they happen with obscene regularity, furious because we have become numb and inured to it, and furious because our legislators refuse to pass laws that would decrease the likelihood of things like this continuing to happen. Read Guns, and you can be furious too. 5/5

Our student council‘s memorial to the Parkland victims: 17 empty chairs. #GunReform #StudentActivism

Hooked_on_books I got choked up watching the walkout coverage yesterday. I am so proud of the kids in this country! I hope they keep it up and force a change that should‘ve happened a long time ago. 7y
WanderingBookaneer @Hooked_on_books : I was live streaming it so that my 6th graders could see examples of young people standing up for what they believe in regardless of the consequences. 7y
Hooked_on_books @WanderingBookaneer That‘s fantastic. They‘re lucky to have a teacher like you. 7y
tpixie That‘s nice- it‘s like the Oklahoma City Bombing victims memorial 7y

I definitely think this is an important article to read. It has some very good insights into the gun-control issue in America. Whether you agree or not, definitely worth the read.

I was reminded of this by @BookishMarginalia and decided to finally read it. Excellent hard hitting essay about gun control by Stephen King.

It opens with a discussion of a book written by King under a pseudonym about a teen who shoots up his school and dies after being shot by the police. The book had been quoted as inspiration for a number of the first school shooters and King talks about his decision to pull the book from publication.

BookishMarginalia That was very powerful, especially since it was his own decision, not public pressure or calls for censorship. 8y

I feel like Stephen King is going to be mad at me but I found a copy of the Richard Bachman collection that has Rage in it. I requested it from the library. I'm so sorry Stephen.

Very short essay by gun-enthusiast Stephen King, who makes good points about common-sense gun control laws in his characteristic style. 👍🏼 to the audiobook too (free on Kindle Unlimited).

freyaheart I didn't know he was a gun enthusiast. 8y
BookishMarginalia @freyaheart Perhaps "enthusiast" might be overstating it, but he certainly is a gun owner (of 3 guns, he writes in this 2013 essay). 8y
freyaheart I can read it for free with prime. I already downloaded it. To bad I already covered G for #litsyatoz lol 8y
Kitta I downloaded this ages ago and haven't got around to reading it, maybe I should bump it up on my TBR. 8y

Started this short #audiobook. King's thought experiment: liberals can only watch Fox News and conservatives MSNBC for a year. What would happen? 🤔

Hooked_on_books I can't watch FoxNews for 5 seconds without disgust. But I don't watch any tv news. I think it's a great idea. 8y
readinginthedark I think the news stations would actually change and adapt to their new customer base, maybe flip sides? Or at least meet in the middle... 8y
Buddys_Momma MSNBC and NBC for that matter are becoming more and more conservative. They call it 'balanced' but we'll see. I can't stand Fox News--I'm afraid I'll destroy my TV while watching it! 8y
Nebklvr I think Fox interviews for people with the naggiest, most shrill voices. I would lose my mind. 8y

Currently reading an essay titled GUNS by Stephen King on my kindle. Sadly I couldn't find it here. - On another note, I have been very busy the past month. I am so close to being a licensed teacher, I barely have time to read. If it wasn't because of chores I wouldn't be able to read at all! The semester ends tomorrow so... YAY!

Joybishoptx Congrats! 8y
Eugeniavb Guns rocks. Everyone in the US should read it. 8y
Louise Yay! Congratulations! 7y
