Having less than six months to live, a terminally ill writer embarks on a coast to coast road trip. Seven names are on his list: the ones who had stolen from him in various ways and would pay for their transgressions. His latest manuscript had been rejected by every literary agent he'd sent it to, but its research has not been in vain. Less than 50% of homicides are solved. The odds are in his favor. Two veteran detectives, Houston's Bill Healy and Barstow's Kevin Walsh, have a mandatory two weeks to solve their similar homicides. If not solved in that time-frame, their respective department chiefs will invite the FBI to intervene. With no pertinent clues, fingerprints or DNA left at the crime scenes, they depend on hunches and luck in order to track down the extremely intelligent killer, who they refer to as "DSB." His first victims were in Texas and California, but the body-count continued on a national scale. All horribly mutilated, a sheet of cardboard is fastened around their necks, a cryptic message written on it. There is only one exit on Richard Calder's highway to either Hell or Heaven. Being a serial killer is more fun than writing about them. It's not how you die, but what you die for.

And finally, the grand poobah, the fiction shortlist for the National Book Awards! 🥳 I‘m delighted to see Chain-Gang going strong and would LOVE to see it win. Otherwise, I‘ve read Eden and Temple from here and they were just so-so for me. I have Drum-Time queued up to get started soon and will have to wait until next week for Blackouts to be released.

BarbaraBB Thanks for sharing. I didn‘t read the longlist but will probably do read the shortlist! 1y

And here are the National Book Award shortlisted books for nonfiction! 🥳 I‘ve read the upper 2 and have the rest cooling their heels next to my reading chair. For this list, I am STUNNED that King didn‘t make it to the shortlist. It is superb and I personally liked it better than Ordinary Notes.

This is where I‘m at with my #tob reading. I‘m very pleased with the progress so far. Of the remaining books, I have the all but Nervous System in my possession or on the way. Maybe this will be the year I read all 18. 🤞🤷‍♀️

Favorites so far include When We Cease to Understand the World, No One is Talking about This, The Sentence, and The Trees. But I really have enjoyed most of these.

Cinfhen My top 4 at this point (because I still have a few left, which I may or may not read) are: No one is Talking, When We Cease, Trees & Intimacies. I did enjoy The Sentence, All‘s Well & the Echo Wife. I wasn‘t crazy about Libertie, Klara, Rooney, Country Friends, In Concrete & Copeland Cane. 3y
Cinfhen I forgot I read Matrix, it makes my Top 8 3y

Ruthiella I still need to read 4 before I‘m a 2022 Shortlist completist, but I‘m pretty sure I can do it. So far my top favorites are The Trees, All‘s Well and Intimacies. 3y
BkClubCare 👏👏👏 It is fun to be a completist! Tho, I find that even if I DNF a title, it gave me a enough of a taste that I can enjoy the matches. I just started When We Cease on audio while driving to my new favorite small town post office 😂 3y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - good to know! I have both Intimacies and All‘s Well from the library and have 10 days to finish. I am possibly not going to finish BookSpinBingo (nor my bookclub book🙄) 3y
Ruthiella @BkClubCare I know! While in TOB fever I struggle to read those other books on my various lists! 😅 3y
squirrelbrain There are 4 I haven‘t read yet, 3 of which are just about to be published here in the UK. I p,an on reading the Sentence, and maybe Our Country Friends if it‘s on Kindle offer. Then I‘m calling it a day. Love your graphic! 3y
Megabooks Great job!! 3y
cariashley Wow, I‘m so impressed! I‘ve read 7 and am going to keep plugging away! 3y
thebluestocking @Cinfhen You and I have very similar rankings! I hope the #tob judges agree. 3y
thebluestocking @Ruthiella I‘m sure you can do it! We still have about six weeks. Plenty of time! 💙 3y
thebluestocking @BkClubCare I‘ve never been on the completist team, but I totally get what you mean about having enough of a flavor to really be invested in the match ups. 💙 I‘m in the same boat as you with book spin. It‘s probably not happening this month! 3y
thebluestocking @squirrelbrain Thanks! You‘re killing it! It‘s difficult to be in a country where some of the books aren‘t even available yet. 💙 (edited) 3y
thebluestocking @cariashley Some years, seven is all I get to. It‘s just fun to read books along with so many people! 💙 3y
thebluestocking @Megabooks Thank you! 💙 I think you win the prize for earliest finisher. 3y

Here‘s where I‘m at with the #tob shortlist. So far, my favorites are The Trees and No One is Talking about This. I‘m currently listening to Libertie. #tob2022

Ruthiella Nice work! The Trees is probably my favorite so far too with Intimacies as a close second. 3y
Well-ReadNeck Seeing the shortlist together I‘m realizing how meh I think it is as a group. Also, they love a weird book. I‘m completely with you about Trees!! 3y
thebluestocking @Ruthiella You‘ve been cranking through the list too! I‘ll have to make Intimacies a priority. 💙 3y

thebluestocking @Well-ReadNeck Yeah. I haven‘t been that inspired by it either. And I only have so much patience for the weird books. But I usually find a couple that I like and wouldn‘t have found otherwise. 💙 3y
BarbaraBB Like @Well-ReadNeck I am a bit underwhelmed so far too. And like @Ruthiella my favorites do far are The Trees and Intimacies. But I have a lot more reading to do. 3y
