Second Foundation
Second Foundation | Isaac Asimov
Isaac Asimov's Foundation novels are one of the great masterworks of science fiction. As unsurpassed blend of nonstop action, daring ideas, and extensive world-building, they chronicle the struggle of a courageous group of men and women dedicated to preserving humanity's light in a galaxy plunged into a nightmare of ignorance and violence thirty thousand years long. After years of struggle, the Foundation lies in ruinsdestroyed by the mutant mind power of the Mule. But it is rumored that there is a Second Foundation hidden somewhere at the end of the Galaxy, established to preserve the knowledge of mankind through the long centuries of barbarism. The Mule failed to find it the first timebut now he is certain he knows where it lies. The fate of the Foundation rests on young Arcadia Darell, only fourteen years old and burdened with a terrible secret. As its scientists gird for a final showdown with the Mule, the survivors of the First Foundation begin their desperate search. They too want the Second Foundation destroyedbefore it destroys them. I'm really enjoying this series, the fight between The Mule and the Second Foundation is perhaps too quickly resolved and sometimes the explanations of the powers of the Second Foundation and the different machines get too technical for a lay person like me, that you tell me they modify minds/this machine blocks stuff?I'm cool with that, don't need the details, although I know they are probably fascinating for some people. Can't wait for the next one!

Second Foundation is a brilliant climax to the trilogy, Asimov teasing various solutions to the questions that he's been building towards, & the payoff was well delivered. It was possible to figure out his puzzle, though he didn't make it obvious. It's nice to have an author who treats their readers as intelligent.

Bonus: I love it when a series has interlocking cover art 😊

Andrew65 Love the cover art. I re-read these last year and still loved them. 4y
Leftcoastzen Wow ! Love the interlocking cover art! (edited) 4y
Bookwomble @Andrew65 It was a re-read for me, too. A journey back to being an 11 year old! Adult me loves them just as much 😊 4y

#Top20Series #20Series20Days #Day13

I missed yesterday, as we had an air conditioning crisis, so I‘ll double up again today.

My introduction to science fiction (with the emphasis on science) was Asimov‘s Foundation trilogy, to which he later added more books, so I think it qualifies as a series. It‘s at least 40 years, and I‘m due for a reread. Hubby is in the midst of doing that now.

Andrew65 I love this series and have been re-reading them recently and still great. 30 - 40 years on like new books! 4y
Zoes_Human I love the Foundation/Robots/Empires universe. I'm still working on collecting them all. Periodically I find myself reshelving them, because I never can quite decide if I want them in publication order or universe chronological. I've read them in both. 4y

This is the fifth volume from "Foundation" series by Asimov. I finally found out where the Second Foundation is. I've never thought that was on that planet. Not in a million years.

I love this volume too. This series belongs in top 3 best SF novels ever together with "Dune". True SF world. Amazing predictions on the future. Such a beautiful world.

A cool conclusion to the trilogy. I‘m not certain if I‘ll continue reading anything about the Foundation but I definitely enjoyed my time with this series. It‘s always fun to go back to the classics. I think I‘ll appreciate space operas more now that I‘ve gone back to the roots. I highly recommend any sci-fi to go back to the original monoliths of the genre every now and then.

Switching between reading Asimov and reading John Scalzi is definitely giving me the strangest literary whiplash I have ever felt. Good thing I‘m nearly done with this book.

Finished book 3 in the Foundation Trilogy, rereading them for the first time in 25-30 years. The plot lines of this series are very good and some strong characters appear in each of the books. Interesting psychologies of people and why they do things come through strongly in these books. Pleased to be re-reading these and I look forward to getting hold of book 4 to continue the read of the series.

Lynnsoprano It‘s been even longer since I read the original series, but that was my introduction to science fiction (emphasis on science), and I loved it. I need to reread these, too. 5y
Andrew65 @Lynnsoprano He was my main introduction to Science Fiction too, it has been fun to re-read them. (edited) 5y

Continuing my reading of Asimov‘s classic Foundation Series by reading Second Foundation.

Bookwomble I read the original Foundation trilogy in the '70s, had to release my editions into the wild at a time I had to downsize my library, but recently bought them again, so they're back on the re-read list! Seeing your post has me thinking of moving them up the order 😊 5y

Yes, because a man would be better off dead than to have a wife who is intelligent, well read, perceptive, self-assured, and outspoken. 🙄 I hope for the girl's sake that she discovers a preference for women.

I find this series simultaneously interesting and dull. I‘d like to see what happens (although the second book was really predictable), but I also keep wanting to do other things or read something else.
This is the third book and I (fortunately?) don‘t have the rest of the series. Not saying I won‘t ever read the rest, but I don‘t think I‘ll be in a hurry to get hold of them.

twohectobooks Yeah this is the problem with some classic sf! I also found the second book really predictable but thought the third one was better. I overall really love this trilogy for its ideas. I have read one of the other books and it was a very different style from the original trilogy (which makes sense, considering it was written over thirty years later). 5y
Leniverse @twohectobooks Even with the predictability I preferred the second book to the first. In part because women actually existed in the second book. 😆 And the first one was a bit too disjointed and episodical. I‘m not far enough into this one yet for a verdict, because I keep getting distracted. 😜 5y
twohectobooks Yep, when I read the first one for the first time I was pretty young and not really paying attention to that sort of thing but even I noticed that there were zero female characters (when I reread it I realized there was ONE). I love Asimov but he sure wasn‘t perfect. Funny how he could envision a future with galactic space travel but not one with women in positions of power. 🙄 5y
Leniverse @twohectobooks Yes, it is highly visionary and yet so very much a product of the 1950s. I have finished part one of Second Foundation now, and so far it is much less predictable! I'm hooked now, but I still find the writing style sparse and the dialogue stilted. 5y

Oh my gosh! It‘s like a Matryoshka doll of mind f*cks!
Mind control wrapped in another layer of mind control wrapped in more mind control. Is there such a thing as free will? The trilogy pays off 🖤

Kathryn: "This is the third book in a series of five. I plan to read all of them. It's classic science fiction that's heralded as the some of the most important of all time. I would like to get through as many of the greats as possible. There's something to the majority of people agreeing over time that a particular piece of work is representative of who we are as humans."

CheriP Agreed! I'm always trying to balance my list with new and classic reads... 8y
Lilith87 It's an amazing series! 8y
Jaywigley It's fun but dated. Only the first three really fit together as intended. But great fun, all of them! 8y
