The Difference Engine
The Difference Engine | William Gibson
1855: The Industrial Revolution is in full and inexorable swing, powered by steam-driven cybernetic Engines. Charles Babbage perfects his Analytical Engine and the computer age arrives a century ahead of its time. And three extraordinary characters race toward a rendezvous with historyand the future: Sybil Gerarda fallen woman, politicians tart, daughter of a Luddite agitator Edward Leviathan Malloryexplorer and paleontologist Laurence Oliphantdiplomat, mystic, and spy. Their adventure begins with the discovery of a box of punched Engine cards of unknown origin and purpose. Cards someone wants badly enough to kill for. Part detective story, part historical thriller, The Difference Engine is the collaborative masterpiece by two of the most acclaimed science fiction authors writing today. Provocative, compelling, intensely imagined, it is a startling extension of Gibsons and Sterlings unique visionsand the beginning of movement we know today as steampunk! From the Paperback edition.

Meh. I really wanted to like this more... I didn't feel like the plot really went anywhere, but it was a fun steampunk romp which was very enjoyable in parts.

+16pts for this book as a TBR... Brings my total for the week to 88pts for #MerryReaders #WinterGames

(2 holiday reads, 1 TBR read, 4 holiday movies - home alone 1 & 2, elf, love actually)

This was a pick for my specfic book club and it's the first book we've chosen that I won't be finishing. I've really enjoyed William Gibson's books in the past, but this plot just dragged on and felt pretty misogynistic. I struggled to get about halfway through before our meeting and based on the discussion I don't think it's something I'll return to. #marchreads #steampunk

1️⃣ Airship or zeppelin, since they are too functionally similar for their passengers to separate.

Pickpick

25th book of the year.
I FINALLY finished The Difference Engine. My brain hurts and I just spent 20 minutes all over the internet trying to clear up all the details that were still fuzzy. I don't even know how to actually go about reviewing this book, I can't. I can just say I honestly loved it and am glad I finally read it. Yay steampunk, the end.

I was so excited to read this book and must admit to being a bit underwhelmed by it. The concept behind it was great and there were many wonderful world building details, but I just really couldn't get into it as I was expecting. I don't know if it was the writing style or what, I'm having trouble figuring that out. However, I'm glad I finally read it.

I'm struggling here guys. It's been days and I'm only 77 pages into this book. I've never been what I'd consider a fast reader but I usually do better than this. It's not that I didn't enjoy the first part of the story but it just keeps wandering away from the story to describe in great detail machines I can't wrap my imagination around. I really wanted to love this and haven't decided to give up yet but I don't know. Advice would be appreciated.

ravenlee I tried to read a Gibson years ago and just couldn't get established in the story. I keep meaning to get back to it but it was such a struggle that I've been intimidated (almost 15 years, seriously). Maybe take a break and read something less taxing, then try again? 7y
tome.fries Yikes! Is there anyway to skim those parts? I've done that (sadly) to get through books. 7y
kristincatastrophic @ravenlee I just breezed through a YA novel the other day trying that. I thought if I could break it up it'd help but I just ended up reading the easy book fast lol. I think I may just have to put it back in the pile until August. My kids are already out of school for the summer so not having a lot of quiet reading time isn't helping. 7y
kristincatastrophic @tome.fries I usually end up missing things when I skim and also end up feeling a little guilty. I will admit to doing it sometimes during fight scenes that drag on forever, like ok he punched him, a kick blah blah, skim skim, who won? 😆 7y
Addison1 Maybe try taking a break for another book you‘re more excited about and trying this book another time when you‘re feeling it a bit more? :) 7y

My order from #Thiftbooks finally came in today. These plus my charity shop haul last week and my TBR pile is getting a little high. What to read first? I think I've decided though, that's why I tagged it.

This is the only book I have read that might fit the #Steampunk theme. In it Babbage perfects his "computer". I read it years ago, don't remember much else about it. ?#SeasonsReadings2016

Marchpane This is the first one that comes to mind for me too. Tried to read it years ago but ended up bailing 😟 8y
Suzze @Marchpane I finished it, gave it three stars. Really remember nothing about it. It doesn't even list a year on Goodreads, which means I probably read it in the late 90's. 8y

A combination #bookhaul and #Litsygoespostal #bookmail ! I am very excited to read The Gettysburg Ghost - it looks like a perfect short and spooky book for #AllHallowsRead ; thank you, Paradise! 👍🏻And, of course, I had to feed my short story collection addiction just a little w/my man Joe Hill. Finally, my wife and I got into a steampunk design show that made me realize I'd never read the Gibson book that helped start it all...

Suet624 I lived in Gettysburg and I've got to say that there sure are a lot of ghosts there. 8y
MyNamesParadise Yay! I'm glad you got it! And hope you enjoy it! 8y
