The Apartment
The Apartment | S. L. Grey
Mark and Steph are struggling to move on with their lives after armed robbers break into their home and brutalise them. Shaken, they decide to get away and leave their troubles behind them. A house swap in Paris with a couple they meet online, the Petits, seems to provide the perfect escape. But upon arriving for a week's luxurious break at the Petits' flat, they find themselves in a festering, run-down apartment. And when Steph attempts to contact the Petits, she gets no answer. Mark and Steph try to make the most of the trip, but they are unable to relax. After a series of increasingly unsettling events, they decide to come back home. Yet when they arrive home, neither of them can shake the feeling that there's now something sinister about their own home. As time passes, Mark's terrorized by a series of unsettling visions. But is it all in his imagination or is there a far more worrying explanation . . .

I finished the tagged book on a somewhat gratuitous but sorely needed solo audiowalk. Although the premise---a vacation rental that goes creepily awry---is perhaps not the wisest choice a day before I check into a short-term rental, it was an enjoyable listen. It's also my June #bookspin selection.

This book was hands down my favorite read of 2021. I couldn‘t put it down and snuck it a few minutes here and there reading in my office at work. Loved. This. Book.

Loved this book, read it in 3 days because I couldn‘t put it down. The author does an amazing job at breezing through the parts that would have made it boring and the speed helps the story move along to create an interesting and captivating read. The book is written from the husbands point of view and the wife‘s every other chapter. Spooky, smart, original. Did not expect the ending.

#MusicalNewYear #day5 #RingOfKeys Not exactly a whole ring of keys, but it‘s the closest I could find in this hoarders closet/library.This was a #blameitonlitsy buy a year ago that I haven‘t gotten around to reading,I should fix that.A couple are left terrorized after a home invasion & decide to holiday house swap to Paris. But the apartment is not what they were promised & unable to contact the owners, return home. But something is not quite right.

Cinfhen Sounds creepy!!!!! 6y
Cinfhen How are u feeling these days???? 6y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen pretty much the same. Xmas was rough, my legs and feet blew up to twice their size & im still feeling the effects of fatigue & nausea.I have a few specialists coming up, it‘s now a year+ on these crutches, so I‘m hoping to at least get to the point I can attempt hydrotherapy & PT. But I have lots of books to read, a comfy chair, my library & the best husband in the world so that‘s keeping me sane. Plus my grandbabies!👫👬Hows your family? 6y

vivastory I've heard good things about this book. Plus, it's co-authored, which is very rare. 6y
Cinfhen That‘s rough, Liz!!! Thank God you are blessed with a wonderful, supportive family ❤️ 6y
Cinfhen And of course your comfy throne 👑 6y
Cinfhen My gang is well, thank God but we are all spread out across the ocean, so that‘s rough. My daughter is in NY and now my middle son is in LA. I MISS my babies 😭😭😭😭😭hoping to see them in March. So something to look forward to. 6y
Lizpixie @Cinfhen I know how you feel, when my grandbabies were in Tasmania it was a physical ache in my chest every time I thought of them.💔 6y

So I can't say it's the best horror genre book I've read, definitely wish it would have explained a bit more of what we were supposed to be so afraid of, that was never really elaborated upon. However, there was some interesting character development and it definitely held my attention for the most part. Not my favorite, a bit disappointed, but not a bad read overall

8leagueboot I definitely agree. I think the character development was the most interesting part, even though I couldn't figure out why the wife was with the husband in the first place... 7y
Ehurtin @8leagueboot yes I feel like we got so little back story into the development of their relationship that it never made sense why they were together. I thought Mark was a much better character than Steph. I was annoyed by the fact that I waited the whole book to finally find out what was even haunting them and you basically never find out anything valuable (edited) 7y

Have you ever read a book where a pretty great lady is hitched to a criminally underwhelming man? I feel like this is a theme that comes up all of the time.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa 😂😂🤦‍♀️Yes! It might be time to start DNFing those books and move onto something better. 7y
Tsubame I learnt a new word and I love it! UNDERWHELMING❣️😂🙈😂 It makes so much sense, why did that never come to my mind before??! Thank you for enriching my vocabulary 😁 7y
8leagueboot @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm going to agree with this plan of action. Onward and upward! 7y
8leagueboot @Tsubame haha well it just described this character so darn well 7y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @8leagueboot Yes, no more encouraging bad writing. There are so many great books out there to read! 7y

Fall is in the air and I am impatient for All Hallows' Read. Getting a kickstart on my spooky reading season with one that has been unread on my shelf for ages, whispering nasty nothings in the night.

Nute Not looking forward to cold weather, but I also love the Spooky Reading Season. I have several books leftover from last year that I purposely did not read and will not read outside of the month of October. 👻🎃 7y

On this dark and stormy night...crawling into bed to work on finishing up this creepy book. I'm liking the atmosphere quite a lot. And the weather outside is adding greatly to that. We've got thunder, lightning, and wind that was howling around the corners of the house. Perfect.

The premise for this was interesting enough, but it never quite hooked me and by the end I was just counting down the minutes to the end of the audio book. I stuck it out for 9+ hours because the pacing kept me thinking that something big was right around the corner. I can't help but think that the book would have benefitted from a shorter, tighter narrative. Perhaps it reads better in print than on audio?

#TBRtemptation post! A highly rated paranormal horror thriller for the cold, dark wintry hours that Like ahead. Basically, it's about a married couple's house swap from hell ?, from Cape Town (after their house is invaded) to an artsy couple's Paris apartment. Their perfect holiday turns deadly, and Mark's past ruptures his bond with Steph. Taut and dark and suspenseful. My cup of café au lait. *Vincent Price cackle* #blameLitsy #blameMrBook ?

It was eerie and all but it was lacking. I feel as if the climax and information came way late. Making the end feel forced. I wanted more details maybe some minor explanations. Just fell flat for me very lax and jumbled in its conclusions. #meh #muchlove #notbadnotgreat

It's a good thing to read late October if you want to get a little spooked. It shouldn't scare you in any way, but I does get a little weird. The ending was a bit meh. Although the book could have given a little more, I did enjoy most of it, and it's the perfect horror for people who don't want to actually get scared.
